anyone help with thomas maynard junior
« on: Thursday 15 May 08 07:05 BST (UK) »

ok ive traced all the maynards now except 2
Thomas junior born 1838 Horsmonden
there is a marriage of Thomas Maynard to Sarah Luck in cranbrook 1861 or sarah bowles 1860 both kent.
ive found a census report 1881 for Thomas born maidstone and Sarah born Eynsford in lambeth surrey. but how do i know its my thomas maynard as there were lots of marriages for that name on frebmd. on that census the oldest child there is born in 1863.
so going on those lines the marriage should be just before that. unless thats not the oldest child.
can anyone find them before that or their marriage to confirm its the right thomas

thanks

In 1861 (RG9/508) an unmarried Thomas is still living with his parents, so the 1860 marriage seems unlikely!

Horsmonden and Goudhurst are close, so it seems likely that the 1871-91 censuses are the same Thomas as yours.

These connect the 1871-91 entries:

Death
Sep 1885 Woolwich
Mary Ann Maynard age 55

Marriage
Mar 1886 Woolwich
Thomas Maynard
Harriett Butcher

The Stephen Smart (b 1870) mentioned as a nephew in 1891 is the son of Henry and Sarah Smart whose first child, Adelaide was born in 1860, but I can't see the marriage yet. Sarah's place of birth (Charlton) suggests that the connection is through Thomas' first wife who was also born there.

The Thomas/Mary Ann marriage is also proving tricky. There is a Thomas Maynard/Mary Ann Tree (or Free) in Cranbrook (which includes Goudhurst) in Jun 1861. If it is this one, it would suggest that Mary Ann had her daughter Mary Ann before marrying Thomas. The other problem is that the births of Elizabeth and Cate do not appear under Maynard in the right place, suggesting that Thomas and Mary Ann married between 1864 and 1868; if this is right then a possible marriage is:

Sep 1866 Lewisham (includes Charlton)
Thomas Maynard
Mary A Ives (one of the possible brides)

I will check later in the day unless someone else does beforehand.

thanks richard.
i have been away today writing up the tree with my friend.
we havnt got round to the maynards yet which has allowed me a little bit more time for the research.
i did notice the Smart guy but didnt have time to do anything about him. by the way i checked up the tree/free and it is tree as the birth record is for a mary ann tree theres no m a free.
i had kinda assumed it was her. but not really knowing Kent at all its hard for me to tell where any of these places are close to. there is a Charlton in London and the kids are born in Lambeth london.
