Crickmore's Saddler Shop
« on: Thursday 15 May 08 11:28 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Would love to hear from anyone that knows anything or even knew of the Crickmore Saddler and Harness Maker shop in George St Altrincham, Manchester.

My ancestors owned the shop from around the 1860's till it's closure in 1963, James Crickmore being one of the first owners and then taken over by his son Edward.

I have been lucky enough to find a Bill of Sale dated 1898 and a great photo of the shop which was found on the Trafford Lifetime website but would love learn more, especially from anyone that may even know who the men in the photo are.

The photo can be viewed at the following site, just type in Crickmore in the keyword and it should come up

http://www.trafford.gov.uk/content/tca/

Cheers

Hi Nari

Have you tried looking for George st on the 1871 census, some of his staff my have lived above the shop. It wont tell you who they are just maybe's

Looking at the Crickmore clan then, they lived in Lloyd St

Thanks Ken, I didn't think of looking at the census records for George St, great idea, I know the Crickmore's lived above the shop at different times over the years so will be interesting to find out who else lived there, and thankyou Eric, love the photo of George St, apart from the one I already had from 1866 and a couple of recent one's that Jackie was kind enough to take for me I hadn't been able to find another for around the time period the family where there so it's great to see.

Hi Mack,

Thankyou for the information, yes Neville is mine but I didn't have any of those details so that is really great to find out, haven't looked to much into Edward and Emma's children yet but you have certainly given me a starting point. Also exciting to know that Neville was apprentice saddler to his father, I knew the shop had passed down the line from James to his son Edward but wasn't sure after that, was only guessing that it was Edwards son's who took over from there.

Thankyou again, I'm also guessing that the details are taken from Neville's war records.

Thanks Annie,

I have seen this site before but had forgotten all about it so going to go and have another look, the Lancashire family are my lot, there are a couple of Crickmore cousins also searching for Edward and Hannah that supplied some of the details to the site.

Cheers
