I note that in the 1880 Census for the US there are two Henry and Sarah Wells couples. If you know the names of their offspring to identify the couple, you can see their reported ages. In Rawls, Mills, Iowa: Henry, Sarah, with Abram, Charles, Ella and Minnie at home. All born in England. In Jolliet, Will, Illinois: Henry, Sarah, with Susanah, Arthur, Emma, Florence and Anna at home. All born in England. If one of these couples are the right people I would suggest that the second, older pair are the ones in the picture. South Dakota became a state in late 1889. This does not really answer your question but hope it might help somewhat.

The 1880 Census is universally available I think. Try
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
This is a basic beginning for England, US and Canada in the 1880-1 time frame.

I would say early 1900s, probably pre-1910, for a date for the photo - the clothing is a little old-fashioned, but the relaxed pose and the ages of the sitters would suggest the later date.
Hope that helps
Cheers Prue

I was gong on the life expectancies of the era....For males and females in 1890 it was only around 48-50..I took it with premature aging etc added on....
Even by 1930 it had only risen to 58...there were of course exceptions!

Irene, thanks so much for the nice clean-up! It is such a poor little photo, I didn't want to ask, but it's much sharper now and nice to look at!!!
Prue, thanks for the date if it's closer to 1910 that would make Henry in his early 60s. He died in 1915. Sarah died at 73 years in 1922. They were tough North of England stock and I believe they lost their homestead when they couldn't pay their taxes anymore, which would explain the old fashioned clothes.
Thanks for your help with this too, Beth and Scrimnet, I really appreciate your interest and suggestions.
Kind regards, Jill
