Deciphering a name in census 1851

In 1851 Richard ROWLAND, his wife Eliza and family are living at 9 Woburn Place, St George Bloomsbury, Middlesex.
HO107/1507/136/5
Their children are
Ellen 16
Agnes 12
Richard 10

Then comes a daughter aged 8 born London, whose name I cannot make sense of. Can anyone help in deciphering this please. Indexed as Luexdubrey.

After her is Mary J aged 6.

Frankly, I can't make head or tail of that!

I see that the births of the siblings either side of her were registered in Holborn district:

Richard Sandon ROWLAND Dec 1840 Holborn 2 128
Mary Jane ROWLAND Sep 1844 Holborn 2 134

The only Rowland birth in Holborn between those two (per FreeBMD) is this one:

Sarah ROWLAND Sep 1843 Holborn 2 107

So perhaps she was Sarah and something very peculiar happened to her census enumeration Huh

However I did think it began with an L.....look at the letter L in birth places of London.

Also dad was born in Swansea  Wink is it a Welsh name we've never heard of?

Can't find any of them in 1861 to compare?

It certainly seems to end  with the letters Dubrey  Shocked

I agree it looks like an L - Lucadubr[e]y or something.  It most certainly does not say Sarah...

1841 does indicate that the children did have a series of middle names.
Maybe Sarah had one a bit like Luxydubrey, and decided to use it in 1851.

Or maybe she was put out that she was plain Sarah when all her siblings had one or two middle names, so she invented a fancy name (like 8 yr old girls do) and it sort of stuck.

Well - go on - can anyone think of anything better!!  Grin

I can't find any of the children later, either.  There are possible deaths for parents Richard and Eliza in Holborn district in the 1850s, though with no ages given these could equally be for others - e.g. the Eliza could be baby Eliza b Dec 1851 Holborn.

There is a birth registration for a Rowland, Sept Ľ 1844 Bloomsbury 1 75 but it is for a Female. Huh

Hi - I'm here again!!

I too couldnt find them on later censuses - trouble is the "children" will be old enough by then to have gone their separate ways and girls to have married. Couldnt find a Sarah marrying in Holborn (or a Luxeydubrey).

I can only think of two ways forward (sadly both involve spending money, but who said genealogy was a cheap hobby?) :

a) to send for Sarah in Holborn's birth cert, to see if she is a child of Richard and Eliza
b) to follow up the deaths of Richard and Eliza in Holborn and to seek out any Wills they may have made. Likely if he was a surgeon. That could well mention his offspring and therefore may well clarify what this daughters name is.
