Can anyone help me find the Harris family from Chard, Somerset in any/all of the census 1841/51/61/71. The information that I have on the family is from the 1881 census which is as follows.
Seekeymore Second Moor Chardstock, Dorset.
John harris 56 b Chard, Somerset, General Labourer. Born c1825 Mary Harris (wife) 56 b Membury, Devon. Worked at home. (Maiden name Cornelius) Born c1826
20 Benn st, London
John. H. Harris (son of John and Mary above) 34 b Chard, Somerset. Boot finisher Born c1847 Elizabeth 35 B Weymouth. (Maiden surname Bowering, and I'm told she was b in Chickerell, Dorset) John.H. son aged 14 b London. Boot finisher Mary.E daug aged 12 b Weymouth Elizabeth J. daug aged 10 b Weymouth George R son aged 8 b Weymouth
So John and Mary Harris had a son John henry bc1847 Chard. But did they have any other children?
Any help with this would be fantastic. I've spent a while up somebody else's tree on this and have just climbed down today after being pointed in the right direction!

Beverley Well, I'm not having so much luck in 1861, I can't see them at all at the moment;
On the 1851 I gave you, John snr. didn't know where he was born and Mary Eliza said born Chard, not Membury.
The only John b. 1847 Chard that I can see on the 1861 has parents John and Mary Elizabeth, born Axminster and Chard, but as well as a few children born between 1851 and 1861 they have a daughter b. 1849 in Lyme Regis - where they are in 1861 - and no William. I'm not at all convinced this is the right ones for 1861.
In 1871 John b. 1825 Chard and Mary b. 1826 Membury are there in Chard with a daughter Emily aged 7. No other children.
In 1851 and 1861 the only Mary Harris b. membury is living in Devon with her husband also born Membury -
Where did you find that John 1825 and mary 1826 Membury were the parents of John Henry b. 1847 ?
I'm a bit fuzzled right now - I'll keep looking

Mum44, Thank you for your message and sorry to put you to so much trouble.
Working backwards and bearing in mind there are several John's I have the following:
John Henry Harris b 1866 Hackney, middx = Elizabeth lee. I have their marriage cert. It shows John Henry's dad to be John Harris occupation "finisher". I checked the 1881 census and came up with John.H.Harris b c1847 Chard, a Boot finisher (shoemaking runs in the family) married to an Elizabeth. This info has been given to me also by a connection on genesreunited who also states, John Henry b c 1847 Chard has parents John Harris b 1825 Chard and Mary Cornelius b 1826....on the 1881 census she gives her place of birth as Membury, Devon. I don't know where my contact got the info but will follow it up.
Thank you again for all yor time on this. Much appreciated
Beverley

Hello again
No trouble - I love a good hunt
Here is your family in 1871:
RG10. P. 2002 Fol. 17 Pg. 25
Living 5 Little George Street, Melcombe Regis, Dorset.
HARRIS John Head M 24 Shoemaker B. Somt. Chard Elizabeth Wife M 25 B. Dorset, Melcombe Regis Henry Son 5 B. London Elizabeth Dau 3 B. Melcombe Regis
NB: both children using middle names, and John just plain John.
There are two apparent registrations in Chard district for John Harris : Q1. 1846 and Q1. 1847. Neither are John Henry....
The only John Henry Harris born in Somerset at that time was Q1. 1846 Taunton.
I found a possible marriage in Weymouth Q1. 1866 for a John H Harris with an Elizabeth Bowering on the same page. On the 1851 abnd 1861 there is an Elizabeth Bowering b. 1848 Charminster, which is about10 miles from Weymouth; Melcombe Regis is more or less IN Weymouth
Just putting all this down for you to think about........

If the 1851 is correct then I dont think the 1871 can be them, the parents ages are way out, they would be about 45 and 46 by then.

1861 RG9/1370/59/14
Church St, Lyme Regis.
John Harris h.m. 35 Cordwainer b Axminster Mary Elizabeth wife 35 b Chard, Somerset John son 14 Sara Elizabeth dau 12 Joseph son 9 Albert son 7 George son 5 Alice Rosina dau 2 Angelina dau 5 months.
The are several distinct similarities here, parents ages and names, even the wifes middle name , fathers occupation the younger children would have been born after the 51 census but the only discrepancy I can see is Sara Elizabeth b c 1848

Little William, 1 month old in 1851, seems to be with his Cornelius grandparents in 1861 . RG9 P. 1636 Fol. 11 Pg. 16

There is a birth of a Sarah Elizabeth Harris June q. 1849 10 - 15 Axminster.
Although Axminster nowadays is in Devon it is also listed as being in Dorset and Lyme Regis comes under that registration dist.

No Patrish - my mistake - John b. 1847 is the "start point" as it were - the person Bev. began with.... I really ought to have made that plain!
I think we have now, between us, got this sorted Except for the mysterious Sarah Elizabeth
The parents of John Harris b. 1847 Chard were indeed John Harris b. 1825 and Mary Elizabeth Cornelius b. 1826. However - John was not born in Chard but in Axminster and Mary was not born in Membury but in Chard
The John b. 1825 Chard and Mary B. 1826 Membury whom Bev. found living in Chard in 1881 are not the right parents
In 1881, the right parents are still living in Church Street, Lyme Regis, where they have been since 1854 -ish (when Albert was born) :
RG11. P. 2126 Fol. 54 Pg. 9
HARRIS John Head M 55 Shoe Maker B. Axminster, Devon Mary Wife M 54 Boot Binder B. Chard, Somt Mary Kate Dau 18 Domestic servant B. Lyme Regis Bessie Rosina Dau 15 Pupil Teacher B ~ ~
