ancestors always seem to be just out of reach.....

hi all,
i recently had a breakthrough with my dad's great uncle, and was sent a copy of his marriage certificate and info from the 1930 census.
the marriage cert says that George was residing at 34 Manning Ave, N. Plainfield and was a chauffeur at the time of his marriage in 1913 to Elizabeth Paterson Wilson.
the census says they were at 57 Sherman Ave, E. Newark
George - 56 - m. 39
Elizabeth - 50 - m. 33
both from Scotland
he was a grocer - own store
but i believe they were at 307 Lee place in 1918 and he worked in auto assembly - any ideas how i can trace this family forwards - children, etc?

Do you know if they had any children? There don't seem to be any living with them in the 1930 Census. If they had children after they got married, then the oldest child would be age 17 at most in 1930, so s/he would have left home pretty early or (hopefully not) passed away.

George was 39 yrs old and Elizabeth was 32 years old when they both married for the 1st time (according to the marriage cert) in 1913, and i don't know any more about them, sorry. they may have had children, and i don't think (personally) that they were too old to have any. but i honestly don't know and that is one of the reasons i am posting here to hopefully find out...
is the 1920 census available to view online? (i am fairly new to seaching abroad and have only really researched Scottish records up to now).

The 1920 Census is on Ancestry.com. You can search on it and see results, but you need a subscription to see the images and full details. I didn't find the in the 1920, but maybe someone else will have better luck.

thanks for the quick responses
sorry, i should have said earlier that i have George in Scottish census' up to and including 1901, 
so he must have emigrated after then. lived in N.J in 1913 and got married, was still in N.J when he enlisted in 1918 and it would appear that he is still in the U.S in 1930, so i wonder where they disappeared to in 1920...
(i have tried to obtain his army records with no luck)

Are you sure he enlisted in the Army? I saw his WWI Draft Registration Card, but that doesn't mean he actually was drafted. He was a bit on the old side for a typical soldier then.
The 1930 Census says George immigrated in 1912 and Elizabeth immigrated in 1907.

I find the year of immigration hard to make out. Ancestry says 1909 for George and 1967 for Elizabeth.

Interesting. On his WWI Draft Registration card, he says he's an alien declarant and they're both listed as aliens on the 1930 Census. Maybe he filed his papers in 1915 and they confused that into being naturalized?
On the 1920, George's immigration date looks like 1904 to me.
