castlebob,
ScotlandsPeople would be no help to you. Death records on SP do not begin until 1855 - the start of Statutory Registration.
There is a submitted entry in the IGI which lists the death of Adam ARMSTRONG as 10 May 1695, Saughtree Dumfries, and of his wife Elspeth SCOTT as 14 July 1734 at Saughtree.
There is also a Pedigree Resource File on FamilySearch with the same information. It includes the name of the submitter of the PRF.
JAP (edited to draw attention to 1695 date rather than 1696)

Bob,
Who knows?
It's a good idea always to record the sources of your own information/records
Have you checked out MIs (Monumental Inscriptions) for the district?
There may well be published booklets of such MIs for the area.
