Ellie Brennan
« on: Thursday 15 May 08 16:46 BST (UK) »

Hi

Can anyone solve a mystery for me please.I am not from Surrey area and got in touch with Tandrige Council to locate my grandads grave which they found although it is an unmarked grave. He did live in Caterham before his death so and was Catholic so presuming maybe there is one large cemetary around Caterham. I was told that there were also two other interments in the same grave along side my grandad. A Ellie Brennan aged 50 years date of interment 21/11/1924. And a Georgina Kingsland aged 55 years date of interment 11/02/1960. Grandad buried in 1959.

Does anyone recognize these names? As I havent a clue who they are! Would they be family or is it normal practise to put several people of an area in same grave that are not related?!!!! Please Help....

Hello you did not mention your Grandad's name that may help

Looked on 1881 Census for Ellie has she would have been born around 1874 according to age at death.  Of course Brennan may have been her Married name.

1881 @ Hayward House St Helens Hampshire
Visiting with the Caws
I..ett Caws        Head Wid  45 Lodging House Keeper  Born Somerset Mark
Annie K Caws    dau           12                                        "   Sea ...Huh?
BEATRICE E Brennan  vis     3                                         " Surrey Norwood

could the E stand for Ellie

also 1881 @ Milligans Place Victoria Rd Chesterton Cambridge
Henry I    Brennan   Head   31 Wodd and Stone ?      Born   Cambridge
Mary Ann     "           Wife    30                                                   "
George I      "           son      6                                                    "
Agnes M      "            dau     5                                                    "
ELEANOR L  "            dau     3                                                    "
Frederick U  "            son     4 months                                       "

realise age a bit out but worth keeping in mind

Let me know more about Grandad age place of birth and Full names and I will try again

regards

Hi

Thankyou for all the info you have found. My grandfather was Charles Richard Reigate b 1881 in Epsom and died in 1959 at Dene Hospital aged 77 years old. His residence was Campbell Rd,Caterham. As you say Ellie could of been married. Have been tracing family tree and have not come up with these 2 names that are interred with grandad. I was half expecting the other 2 interments to be his mother and father,or perhaps his wife,(my gran) but I know that she didnt die till at least 1968. It is certainly raised more questions than what the discover has answered!!!

A real puzzle this, do you have census records for Charles say 1881 1891 is it possible he has a sister named Ellen, Eleanor etc  Do you know Charles parents names.  As I don't know, there is an 1891 will list it but may be wide of the mark  I am thinking Ellie Brennan could be a
sister.

1891 @ Stroud Green Road Croydon Surrey
James      Reigate  Head Marr  42          Born   Surrey   Woodside
Jessie                    Wife            33                       "

Hi

For some reason grandad not on 1881 or 1891 Census. He is on 1901 as a carman aged 19 year living with his parents and siblings. This was Spencer Rd,Caterham. His mother was Mary Ann (nee Burnell) and father William Reigate. His siblings apart from brothers were Sarah,Kathleen,Ann Nora and Lily Ann. Thats why it is so puzzling as seems no obvious connection. You may have a point that for some reason maybe one of sister had nickname and he was interred with them. I know that Sarah is ruled out as know her parters name.Lily Ann and Ann Nora although have sent for certificates think pretty sure who partners are. Kathleen is only one very vague at mo.
Certainly poses a problem.

Hi Mayday.

You have not mentioned in which graveyard your grandfather was buried?

I think that Tandridge Council could have more details. They may be able to tell you if the cost of your grandfather's burial was met by a relative or friend. If not then the local authority would have to accept the charge. If this was not the case then burial records, held at the cemetery, may give details of the undertaker used. From them you may be able to find out if any cost stipulation was stated.Assuming of course that they are still in business.

Yes, the local council should be able to tell you whether it was a "public" otherwise known as "pauper's" grave whereby the ground is owned by them (the council) and further unrelated persons may be buried in the same grave or whether it was a "purchased" grave with the deeds to the grave held by the family for x number of years.

The family are on 1891 Census at Caterham
Ref: RG12/ 582 F 74 P 61
On Ancestry they are indexed as REYGATE.

Hi

A big thankyou to everyone. I will contact the council again to confirm which graveyard and all the details of funeral if records still exist.

Big thankyou again!
