John WOODHOUSE
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 17:48 BST (UK) »

I am trying to identify the John Woodhouse who is the father of the Margaret born in Colby, Norfolk in 1781.  She married Matthew Everitt in Little Walsingham in 1802.  Internet sources say her parents were John and Elizabeth (Hooker or Lee or Huh).  I have found 5 John Woodhouses born in that area about the time Margaret's father would have been born:

1.  Ludlum 14 Jun 1747, Thomas & Martha
2.  West Beckham  4 Mar 1748  Thomas & Mary
3.  Giminghan 21 Jan 1749  John & Ann
4.  Horning  3 May 1751  Jonathan & Mary
5.  South Creake  16 Dec 1753  Elizabeth
6.  There may be others

I really don't know how to find which is the right one.  Seems to be a rather common name in those parts.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Any help with Margaret's mother Elizabeth would also be appreciated.

Hi

I think your John Woodhouse is the Gimingham one.

John and Elizabeth's first child was called Brown Woodhouse baptized 9 April 1779.

John and Ann Woodhouse had a Child called Brown Woodhouse  baptized  Feb 1754 Grimingham.

Thanks for all the information, Eileen.

I found a list of 8 children for John & Elizabeth Woodhouse, all in Colby.  Brown is an odd given name, so I would think you are right about which are the parents.   But do you know where the Brown comes from?  Is it maybe Ann's family name?

I checked FamilySearch for marriages for Edward Hooker and Frances and found nothing.  I also checked for John Woodhouse and Ann with no luck.

I have found that naming patterns are great clues in finding ancestors.  The descendants of these Woodhouse & Everitts that came to North America named their children for ancestors.  I have figured out where most of the names came from, but there are still some of them I have not.  One name was Edward and another was Fanny (Frances).  So I think you just solved that mystery for me.

Thanks also for mentioning Freereg.  I had not seen that before.  I will be checking that out.

If you find any more on these folks please let me know.

Claire
