Thanks again, Adam.
It's a pity if some stones have been rendered unreadable: I thought I could perhaps discover why various people on the internet seem convinced John was born in 1712. My direct ancestor, his son George, was just a fairly successful businessman in Sheffield, but his brother John was a very innovative engineer, as well as a colliery manager, & his sons were another engineer, an Australian statesman, & a rather heroic RC priest. An interesting family.

Frances Ann
Thanks for all your efforts.

Hello Linda. There are nine Greenwell gravestones from the late 1700's with inscriptions for the ranks of Colonels, Majors, Judges, Vicars etc.
Do you think they are yours?
Saves me typing out that lot if they do not belong to you.

Hi

Could you please post the MACE info - I don't think it has been asked for

I'm looking for either Henry or Vernon or their families. It is a bit of a long shot as they were originally from Northumberland but they had a half brother in Lanchester

Thanks

Hello Steve. Here is the only gravestone inscription for Selby:-

In memory of John Selby of Langley Park, who died February/5/1804 aged 99 years.
Ann, his wife, died October/13/1824 aged 81 years.
And Elizabeth, their daughter, died June/25/1825 aged 40 years.
Also John, their son, who died December/12/1846 aged 73 years.
Also Barbara Byerley, their daughter, who died 9/July/1866? aged 68 years (the last date and age a bit difficult to read.

The lanchester Watchman inscription has already been posted on post 51. It is on the same gravestone as the Shield surname.

Hi Adam

Thank you so much for the info. This is very exciting!

I'll need to look further but it seems another piece of the jigsaw falls into place.

Vernon Mace had a daughter Vera b.Lanchester 1913.

Vernon and Henry worked at Malton Colliery but I'm not sure where they lived - will need to check the census.

Thanks again
