Does anyone recognise this man?

My 3x g.grandfather died in 1873 of Mental Aberration and Prostration. The definitions on www.antiquusmorbus.com are:
Mental Aberration. A rather vague term for a condition in which the mind acts abnormally, but which does not necessarily amount to insanity. [Appleton1904] ...
Prostration. Great depression of strength. Almost total loss of power over the muscles of locomotion. [Dunglison1868]
Do you think this is what we would call Senile Dementia today, or has anyone any other ideas. He was only 69 when he died and had been widowed twice. On the 1871 census, he is living with a family consisting of a couple, their daughter, her husband and their 5 children, so quite a squash.

Lizzie,
Could he have been suffering from severe depression?
Regards, Josephine
P.S. Oh, duh, that wouldn't have killed him on its own. Scratch that.

I think they were familiar in those times with dementia as a symptom of ageing.
My greatx3 grandfather died in 1877 in the East Kent Lunatic Asylum at Chartham, and his cause of death is listed as "Senile Decay"
So I think your greatx3 grandfather has something slightly different.
Given the apparent loss of mind and body, I wonder if he'd had a stroke?

Deb - That crossed my mind too, especially with the mental aberration part, as many people think chronic fatigue syndrome is all in the mind, even today. However, he was 68 when he died and 2 years earlier had been working as a gardener (his lifelong work).
I suppose it will always remain a mystery.

Hi Lizzie, I suspect that he might have a had a series of tiny strokes which killed off small areas of the brain - areas that affected movement or motor control. My father suffered from multi infarct dementia that took place gradually over several years, and it sadly not only affected his memory and contact with reality, but also sometimes his ability to get up and stand up - so I can only presume some area of the brain had been damaged that enabled him to transmit those messages properly. So sad. Hope this helps. Paulene

I suspect you may be right. His granddaughter ( my g.gran) died of intercranial haemorrhage and paralysis, which to my mind is a stroke causing paralysis.

Hi Lizzie, Yes, it is similar, but whereas you see a definite effect with a normal stroke this is much more subtle and gradual - that's probably why it's called multi - lots of tiny bleed and damage. The effect is not so dramatic and therefore less easy to detect at the start. Paulene

Paulene,
That happened to my husband's father, too. It's very sad.
