Help with Edinburgh Street please?
« on: Thursday 15 May 08 20:56 BST (UK) »

Hi guys,

I am trying to seek info on the following address. On a relative's death certificate place of death is down as "5 Vennel, Edinburgh". She died there in March 1965.

Does anybody know if this is supposed to mean Vennel Road, Street, etc?

If anybody can provide info on the are I would be grateful!

Reaybo.

It's just called the Vennel.  Google: Vennel, Edinburgh and youll find various websites.  Also. if you go to www.streetmap.co.uk and enter its post code EH1 2HU you'll see that it's located off the Grassmarket.

It should be West Port Vennel but that has been dropped for a number of years, no doubt as far back as to when the Flodden Wall was built.

Good pictures at henniker.org.uk site but direct links not permitted.

Realised the date was 1965 - this could have been the Salvation Army Women's Hostel
