Sarah GROOM ( Tunstall) Inquest
« on: Thursday 15 May 08 21:51 BST (UK) »

Can any one help please? Through this site I was able to find my ggg grandparents John Groom (1784 - 1854) and Sarah Groom nee Burrows (1792 - 1880) and I know they are buried in Tunstall.
On Sarah's death certificate it gives cause of death as "death from accidental burns". There was an inquest held on the 14th December 1880. I wonder if there is any way of getting a copy of the coroner's report?  Huh

Thanks

Have found a piece about her in the Ipswich Journal. If you register for the free Gale trial you can search for yourself.

Ipswich Journal - 18th December, 1880

SHOCKING ACCIDENT = TUNSTALL
On Tuesday, the Coroner(C.C.Brook Esq.) held an enquiry  at this place, on the body of Sarah Groom, widow, 89. It appears that on the evening of the 29th ult, deceased filled a benzoline lamp, but finding she had put too much oil in it, poured some of it out on to the fire. The lamp was naturally all a blaze, which caught the clothes of the old lady. A little girl who resided with her gave the alarm, and a labourer came in and extinguished the flames, but the poor woman was so badly burnt about the face and throat that she expired on Monday morning last from the injuries received. A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.

Thank you very much. What a sad way to die especially as she had reached a good age.  Cry Cry

If you want the complete Coroner's Inquest report you should be able to obtain a copy from the SRO if you quote this reference with her name and place of death - Tunstall.

Thank you - this is a fantastic site. Thanks again to Suffolk Sue for the Gale free trial link. Through that I was able to find out more about my gx2 grandmother who was involved in the Albion disaster on the Thames in 1898. I thought she drowned but apparently she and my gx2 grandfather were rescued. However Alice died a week later and so became the 35th victim.

Well done Janet. There are probably more ancestors that will turn up, if you keep searching.
