General Hewett 1848
« on: Friday 16 May 08 03:35 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find a passenger list for the ship, General Hewett which carried UK emigrants to Australia. I am specifically looking for my ancestor, Mary Thorpe who was from Scotland and I think came out on the General Hwett in 1848. I have only been able to locate a passenger list for 1854. Can anyone help? Maxene

Thanks, Cando. I had actually found that reference in the Key name search; I was hoping to view a shipping list in the hope that it would give me additional info (like where she came from, if any other family members also travelled on the ship, etc). Do you know if there is anywhere else I could look? Cheers, Maxene

You can order a photocopy of the entry from the website.  I am not sure what additional information it would give you.

Hello  there Maxene

As she came as an assisted  immigrant  you  might  get a  bit  of  information  from  it.  I  got a copy  using a transcription  agent  in  NSW  of  my ggmother's records pretty  basic  but  it  gave  me a  further discovery.

This is  what  was on  it
Name
Age
Calling
Native Place and County
Parents
Religion
Reads or Writes
Relation in the Colony
Health and Probable Usefullness
Complaints while on Board Ship
Remarks

I  was very surprised to  See Brother Michael at Cootamundra Listed  which  gave  me  more family  to research!

There are a  number of transcription agents  in  NSW  I  use Laurie Turtle myself but  others  are  just as  good  it seems  from  fellow RC'ers comments.

regards Jenn

from  the NSW  on line BDM site

Transcription Agents
The Registry has accredited Transcription Agents who are able to provide genealogists with full transcriptions, partial transcriptions or verification of certain fields of a birth, death or marriage record.

Transcription Agents are particularly useful when you do not need full-certified copies of a birth, death or marriage certificate but just want the information in order to be able to continue your research.

Fees vary according to the request. Refer to NSW Birth, Death & Marriage Certificate Transcription Agents:

To Tropicalj and Jenn - thank you for your helpful advice; I have contacted one of the recommended transcription agents to see if I can get hold of the info I want. I have only ever used a transcription service to get an extract of a birth or death certificate; you learn something new every day on RootsChat!!! Thanks to you both once again. Maxene

Hi maxene

Will be interested to learn what info you receive from the transcription agent - I am wondering about the cost in comparison to purchasing the photocopy from the website.

Just curious.

Cheers for now

If you go to the index for the period specified
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=4

You can simply search for the ship and the date & you will get a full list of everyone onboard (well all the assisted folks) - it is in alpha sequence, so you won't see who travelled together. Given that for your lass "and family" is not mentioned on her index record, I would think she either travelled alone, or perhaps with a married sister (as some of my immigrants did).

If you live in a capital city or a NSW main town, your  library may have copies of the NSW films and you can check them for yourself. They are part of the "Archives Resource Kit" - NSW addresses are given here
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/archives_in_brief_40_2046.asp

I know they are also available at the Qld State library - so probably other states as well. I have also used one of the transcription agents (until I discovered the films were at the library in Brisbane  Roll Eyes  )

Trish

Edit: It is  cheaper than from the archives Cando, and a transcript rather than a photocopy - from memory - I will find the one I have & post it - it was not my man  Cry  Cry  - If you check Laurie Turtle's web site he has the price online

Edit: JENN - my apologies - you went invisible on me & I didn't see that you had already listed what was on the transcript - as my daughter would say "My bad"  Embarrassed  Embarrassed

There are two different films referenced & I can't remember what I paid - whether each film was additional $$. The information was similar - but some variations - so this was it
One Film

REFERENCE  Immigration Department: Assisted Immigrants inwards to Sydney who arrived per the “Sirocco” on 28th January 1864, SRNSW 4/4988, SRNSW Reel 2482

OTHER DETAILS
NAME
AGE
CALLING
NATIVE PLACE OR COUNTY
PARENT DETAILS
RELIGION
READS OR WRITES
RELATION IN COLONY
HEALTH & PROBABLE USEFULNESS
COMPLAINT RE TREATMENT ON SHIP   none
REMARKS BY IMMIGRANT BOARD   No entry

All the items were completed - my man (who was not my man) was voted Good for "Health & Usefulness"

Film 2
REFERENCE   Immigration: Persons on Bounty Ships (Agent’s Immigrant Lists) 1864-65, SRNSW 4/4798, also SRNSW Reel 2139
This gave details of the ship - total passengers, deaths on board etc  but didn't give as much information about my individual immigrant. It seems the "immigration" film contains more personal information. it did include details of the costs related to the shipping

Hope this helps

Cando - when I receive a quote, I will let you know if it is cheaper or more expensive than the photocopy from the website.
The website only lists my ancestor's name and age - I was a bit apprehensive about ordering the photocopy in case that is all the info that will appear on it. Anyway - I'll see what the transcription person says. I appreciate all the info I have received, thanks. Maxene

Cando - the cost of a photocopy from the website is $25; the cost from the transcription service is $15 plus $1 postage and handling - I've gone with the transcription people. Maxene
