lookup NZSG CD births & shipping
« on: Friday 16 May 08 06:59 BST (UK) »

Is it possible for someone to look up some birth records in NZ for me, Please!!!

William John Smith ABT 1857 & brother
Francis or Frank ABT 1860
Their parents are Samuel & Eliza Smith who were probably born uk

or if they were born in uk when they arrived in NZ? By 1899 at least, they were in Australia, when did they leave NZ?

or births for Children of William John Smith & Elizabeth Smith (Goodson) m 1883 NZ

Frank Smith Huh?
Charles Herbert Smith Born 1886
Violet may Smith?Huh?
Cyril Goodson Smith Huh?
Sydney Smith Huh?

They all  ended up in Australia (already in Aust 1899), When did they leave NZ?

I would be very happy if someone could help. I know its hard with a name like Smith.

Hi Fike

Firstly, just to clarify;    there is no NZSG  CD which gives birth information.      The New Zealand Birth Index is in microfiche format and is available in libraries etc.     The Index only shows the surname / christian name(s) of a child and a folio number.   With this folio number it then possible to consult a paper-based resource (known as "District Keys") for the relevant year (of birth), and thus determine in which district the birth was registered.

Obviously, as with all searches, you are reliant on the goodwill of RootsChatters and the amount of effort they are prepared to go to.    And the more information you are able to supply, the better.  (e.g.   the children of William and Elizabeth SMITH - are you able to work out their approx. years of birth, say from death records) ?

I'm afraid I wasn't able to locate a passenger list into NZ which shows the arrival of a "Samuel and Eliza Smith".

So, some questions for you ....

1)    What information do you already have, which suggests that Willam John and his brother Francis /Frank might have been born in NZ ?

2)     Yes, I can see on the Marriage Index CD,  William John SMITH and Elizabeth GOODSON - 1883 .... do you have this cert ?
If so, where did they marry ?   (Place of marriage is not given on the Index).

3)     Where in NZ did this family live ?

4)      Did Samuel and Eliza SMITH also make the trip to Australia ?

With regard to your question - "when did they leave NZ"  ...
that may be difficult to determine precisely (well at least in terms of an outward voyage) and you'd be better to look at passenger lists for persons "coming into Australia".   (Electoral rolls or directories in NZ may provide some clues -
but they shouldn't be relied upon to provide "accurate" information).

Hi
Agree sadly without a distinctive 2nd name this family will be nigh on impossible
There are 10 W J Smiths on 1893 electoral roll and countless Elizabeth's

Looking at shipping into Victoria from NZ is even more of a nighmare
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/Index_search.asp?searchid=23

Buying that marriage cert is a must if you want to proceed, because of the location, occupation info it will provide and or Charles birth cert

Hi Fike

re:  Bunny's wonderful find  ~  (and the children of William John and Elizabeth SMITH, mentioned in the thread found at rootsweb).

There is lots of information to be had by looking at the NSW BDM online index.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/

e.g.   Cyril Goodson SMITH - death 1972 - Reg'd. at Campsie
(s/o William John and Elizabeth) ...

and a probable marriage for him -  1918 to Constance G. MEREDITH - reg'd.  Canterbury ?

[Most of the other "children" appear to be on this index too - marriages / deaths.   It's a great resource especially given that most death records include parent's names of the deceased.  I've just recently been able to find lots of my own family listed there and thus move my search forward].

Mmm ... we still haven't found your "Samuel and Eliza SMITH"
yet ?

Hey there guys,

I had a look at the rootsweb link I posted and have realised that the person asking the questions there is also a Rootschatter!  Find the person's name from Daintree on the RW site and the RC site user name is her name all run together.  I suggest a PM to see what collaboration you both can do together maybe.

Won't stop the rest of us looking, though.  Nosey parkers that we all are.  Hmm, carrots huh?  Just had roast ones for dinner.  Obviously a good sign  Grin

Okay, I think that the Goodson family arrived on the Stracathro in Auckland on 1 March 1880.  Whole pile of them.  Haven't found the Smiths yet.....

Munch, munch

Thanks to Bunny & all ,  for all your advice. Have been in touch with Rootsweb contact.
Since then have been to passenger lists at Auckland Library online & found the Smiths were aboard the same ship as the Goodsons but I had the wrong names (which were listed wrongly on death Certs.)

Could someone please look up the passenger list for Stracathro that left Gravesend 27/11/1879, & arrived Auckland 1/3/1880 for:

Emma Smith
Herbert Smith
William Smith
Francis Smith

& let me know everything that is listed for these people?

There is no passenger list available for this particular voyage of the "Stracathro".

It is recorded as departing and arriving on the dates you have supplied .... the only additional information is that it brought "103 passengers".

[Info on this voyage would, I'm sure by now, have been published on one of the "passenger lists" websites - the above is the only reference - which suggests also that nothing has been found in the way of a passenger list published in a newspaper].

Your Rootsweb contact mentions "Goodson family" on this same "Stracathro" voyage ?     Perhaps you need to find out where she sourced that information from and if in fact a passenger list exists  ??

Hi there,

Okay, this is what you can do to construct the passenger list.

Go to http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/findyoursubject/digitallibrary/historyandgenealogydigitallibrary.htm and then choose the option for Auckland Area Passenger Arrivals Search Now (note the huge gap in years but you're lucky).  Then in the search engine part put the name of the ship Stracathro and the year 1880.  The results should (give or take) give you at least the names of all of the people who came out.  Not a true passenger list but will list your Smiths and everyone else.

Cheers

Thanks Bunny & Lucy 2,

Thanks again. Have already been in contact with Rootsweb Contact & I got all the information that I already have from the Auckland Library shipping index but unfortunatly it doesn't have much information.
