Hi:
I'm looking for John CLOWES b 1852, in the 1871 census. He marries in Sunderland in 1880, where he shows up in the 1881 census as an ironworker, birthplace given as Bitchburn, which I think is incorrect
Thanks, Linda

Many thanks ladies!
I couldn't find such a place as Bitchburn on Streetmap, so presumed it must be wrong?
Strange move of occupation from an ironworker to a greengrocer? Less hazardous
I would appreciate the 1891 and 1901 if you don't mind.

Hi Lindy -
I googled Bitchburn. It is actually called North Bitchburn (or it is now) and is a village north west of Bishop Aukland, near Howden le Wear and Wolsingham. It had a colliery and a brickworks in the 19th century - the colliery apparently sank
Here thy are in 1891: RG12 . P. 4132 Fol. 104 Pg. 20

Thank you, that 's wonderful.
John's daughter Harriet married into my Nicholson family and she gave her son the middle name of Clowes.

Thanks Jay.
I assumed it was a wrong name because of the obvious connotation - but I forgot things were not so "politically correct" as they are today
