This is the description of Banksman Banksman / Bank Manager / Browman In charge of the cages at mine pitheads - sometimes known as a Bank Manager
I knew it had some connection with mining.
What we have got to remember is that Robert in 1841 was literate enough to be a census enumerator, now what education was available in Durham in the early nineteenth century for the children of mine employees?

Robert seems pretty consistent with his DOB 1815...does the other bapt of Robert (Oct 1816) s/o Thomas T and Margaret Drury, tell us how old he was.?
The Robert b Sunderland , 1815 was s/o William T and Margaret Robert b 1815, Wickham was s/o Thomas T and Ann Johnson (Whickham = Gateshead RD)
can you believe this ..I have Jake home from school with headache , Now Kate has called from School with headache ......wonder if they planned it ? It's a conspiracy!!!!

From what I remember from mining where I live a Banksman was a step up from the ordinary miner, but in Durham at that time I just don't know whether his father would have been in a position to have afforded for him to be at school rather than down the mine from the age of 7/8. Maybe you could contact someone from the Durham Mining Museum for their opinion.

Just a thought
Did Robert snr ever use Drury as his middle name ...or even put a 'D" in his name ... I am thinking that he should have/may have somewhere . Maybe we should follow the possible Sibs of Robert snr ... see if they provide clues
I'm also thinking that if he was the enumerator he may have added Drury to his name , if he was s/o Thomas and Margaret Drury

another thought ... Robert was b 1815...supposedly Thomas T and Margaret Drury had other children who were older than Robert ...so was Robert the only one with the Drury middle name? Surely the older brothers would have it too.
Here's the Turnbull Drury link Penshaw All Saints Robert Drury Turnbull 6 Oct 1816 s/o Thomas Turnbull and Margaret Drury of Burnmoor, occupation Banksman Mary born 3 June 1810 baptised 15 July 1810 4th daughter [it might be 4th child a daughter] of Thomas Turnbull, bankman, native of Washington parish by his wife Margaret Drury, native of Washington Parish. Catherine 1796(residing Wharton's Row), William 1799 (2nd son), George 1807(4th son), Mary 1810. It says banksman there but on the Marriage cert it says husbandman
William b 1799 = 2nd son George b 1807 =4th son Robert Drury 1815 = ?? son
1841 Washington William Turnbull 40 engineer Y ...did he also have an education? Isabella 35 Y mary 13 Y William 12 Y Jane 10 Y Michell 8 Y Matthew 4 Y Charles 2 Y
In 1851 William is a colliery engineer with wife and 2 extra kids Elizabeth 9 and Margaret 6.
There is no sign of William having the Dury middle name.
In 1841 there is another William Turnbull and family in St Oswald. he is a coal inspector and has a daughter named Margaret. Don't know if this is our area!
Why would Robert be the only one to get the middle name?? When Robert married Magaret Balsam why didn't he give it. Hopefully Robert jnrs birth cert will reveal all

My great grandmother gave her 8th child, a girl, her maiden name as a middle christian name. So you can't always work out why they named their children in the way they did.
