Can anyone give any advice on the date of the clothes in this picture.
The Photographer is Edward G BREWIS Victoria Art Studios 8 & 10 New Bridge Street Newcastle on Tyne
I found a reference on one website to them being in business in the 1890s
Sorry that I have watermarked the picture but I don't own it, just sent to me for advice.

Hi, Still thinking about the clothes - but I can tell you that Edward G Brewis is listed as a photographer in the Northumberland Kelly's Directories from the 1894 edition to the 1914 edition (this is the last I have on www.historicaldirectories.org) Gives us something to work on. I'll be back if I find out anything more regarding the outfit. Old Rowley is one known as being one of the best on dating gentlemen's clothes. Hope this helps. Paulene

Paulene Thanks, I just found one reference but will have another look later to see if I can find any more. Plenty of advice online on women's clothes but not as much on men's though it probably did not change as much. Thought of thing that can be answered quickly if you can find the right person to ask.
It will be easy in a hundred years as they will be able to date the replica football strip, as worn by a lot of men and women, to within a few months.

Don't personally think it's later than 1901, but still looking for more evidence to support this - as you say there isn't much to go on. Paulene

Just found this - style of beard, which some describe as 'royal' beard fits with your gentleman. http://17thstreet.net/more/costume/male.php Paulene

Thanks, it all seems to point towards the 1890s.
He was living in Oxford Street in 1891, I understand that he worked at John Lewis and the address looks like staff accomodation. He is said to have met his future wife there and there is story of them watching the Diamond Jubilee (1896) together. They married in North London in 1900. He is said to have been a salesman (fur?) at some point so perhaps moved into that line later in the 1890s which explain him being outside London.
