Do you remember OR talking about watch chain holes? There are several threads in which he points out that the use of a regular buttonhole to fasten a man's Albert or watch chain indicates a photo taken prior to 1888/89. It was then that an extra hole between the normal buttonholes came into common use, just for the watch chain.
These men all have their Alberts fastened through the buttonholes. So I would venture to guess that, if not the photo, at least the men's waistcoats date from before 1888 or so. Men not being the slaves to fashion that ladies often are, may be a few years out of date. But since there isn't a dedicated Albert hole in the bunch, could it be fairly close to this date? Is it possible?
There needs to be a woman in the pic...they're easier to date
Thanks for your fascinating answer! You are a mine of information!!
Of course, I made a mistake by saying it was my great uncle! I'm not quite that old!!
It is my great great uncle, who was born in 1853. He is the one fifth from the left on the back row, with the big moustache!! (Behind the chap who looks like David McCallum ) So your date of mid 1880s could be spot on!!
I don't have the original - this is a copy I had made about 10 years ago, and as the person who lent me the original is no longer with us, I have no idea what is written on the back, if anything.
COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC ...OUCH Prue ..but my grandfather played violin in the scottish orchestra led by David Mcallums father ..
