Petersfield Mother & Baby Home or Children's Home
« on: Friday 16 May 08 21:49 BST (UK) »

Hi, I wonder if anyone out there could help me with this.   I'm looking for the name of a Children's/Mother and Baby Home that was in Petersfield in C1941.    Have no idea where to start with this but have checked the children's society and they don't have one in Petersfield.

If anyone can help, thank you very much.

Sorry I don't know the answer, but I would try Petersfield library or museum, one or both should know.  I see you have  the surname BRIGHT.  Are they Hampshire Brights?  I have Brights from St. Mary Bourne, Whitchurch, Liphook, all in Hampshire.

Hi, Thanks for response re Petersfield

About the Brights - my maternal grandmother was a Bright b 1885 Museum Street, London, married 1905 to William Foster.    I haven't "done" the Bright's in great detail - I believe, way back, they originated from Stylehampton in Worcestershire but certainly Lizzie Georgina (my Bright) moved eventually from London to Hampshire, possibly near Petersfield and even more possibly near Weeke.   I am not entirely sure why they moved to Hampshire, there certainly seems to be some connection with the family but I assumed it was the Foster side.

What I have on the Brights is rather muddled and I had thought not to go any further with them.   Lizzie Georgina had a few brothers and sisters, her parents were James Bright and Eliza Ellis b 1860.  James Bright's father was Jeremiah Bright (wife Mary) b 1811 - 4 children.
Jeremiah's father was John 1791 no name for wife and only child I have for them is Jeremiah.   John is, I think, the one who came from Stylehampton.

Do let me know if they are connected to your Brights.   Incidentally, my family tree, which is as up to date as I know it, is on Genes Reunited - if you happen to be a member I can open the tree to you - there is, however, little on the Brights.    I think there are other people looking for Brights on there as I have had several enquiries about them - mine have not matched theirs i.e. parents and siblings different.

Best wishes, Sue

Hi Sue,  Disappointing.  Definitely not the same Brights, as mine go back several generations all in Hampshire.  My grandparents were JAMES and ELIZA, but her maiden name was Harris. and James' father was Charles.   Yes,  I am on GR, but have never had a Bright contact on any site.

I Googled "Petersfield Museum" and also "Petersfield Library" and both have a "Contact Us" facility.  I've always found museum and library staff very helpful.  If no joy at either of these you could try Hampshire Record Office.

Good luck,
Sheila
