Hi and Welcome to Rootschat.
Loads of names were written various ways - for the same people and even in the same document ,for the same people - until recently.
Much of the information in documents was given orally to whoever wrote it down, and the person giving it was often a non writer, and even the person writing may not have been that proficient.
Of course there were variations in transcrining, for all the obvious reasons, not least of all illegible writing which we can have today.
My grandparents name was still being written differently, into the twentieth century.
I hope that helps.
Enjoy Rootschat. I've had loads of help fro people all over the world.
Best wishes
Emms

Hi Cundy,
For what it's worth, all of the people I know in this area or have dealt with in records for the area with variations on your name, were called Moffat or possibly Moffatt.
If this were my family though, I would look at each entry with an open mind, and if the date and other details fit, take it seriously.
Maybe if you can give us a few more details, if there's anything you can mention on line, we can give you a bit more help, or put it in a pm if you like and I'll have a look.
Best wishes
Emms

Hi Cundy
I'm with Emms in that if it looks right and feels right then it's worth consideration but if you want the real expert opinion try the Clan Moffat site at http://pagesperso-orange.fr/moffatclan/index.html
Yes, there is one and if you have Moffat in your family then you can join . In the meantime look at the section on name derivations - I think there are about 20 variations on the spelling and they don't mind which one is used.
