Any Census - Henry Morris Mason of Overseal
« on: Tuesday 18 January 05 23:30 UTC (UK) »

I am hoping that Some one can help me trace a Henry Morris Mason of Overseal on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire Border.

I have been given a newsaper obituary probably printed in the early twentieth Century.
It records the death of Mr. H. M. Mason, who died aged 61 years leaving a widow two sons and one daughter. He lived on Branstone Road, Overseal and was an engineer at Messrs Bass and Co - the Brewery.  The clipping has no date.

I know this person fits into my family tree but so far I have tried but have been unable to find a link.

If anyone can find this person and his family in a census it would be really appreciated.

Many thanks,

Andy

Hello Andy Smiley

I've had a look on the 1901 Census and there are a total of six Henry Mason's.  This entry that's looks like a possible match.  Unfortunatley, the website was misbehaving and I wasn't able to view the actual census page, but the reference for it is RG13/2640, Folio 38 page 20.  The entry is as follows:

Henry Mason, aged 60, born Castle Gresley (which is about 5 miles north of Overseal), Derbyshire.
Sarah Mason, aged 53, born Lound, Leics.
Eliza Mason, aged 28, daughter, born Castle Gresley
Trevor Shaw, aged 24, boarder, born Gresley Wood.

For the 1881 Census please use this link
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

On the 1871 Census both he and Sarah are there with a 6 month old baby daughter named Mary.  Henry's occupation at that time was coal miner.  They also had Hannah "Marnfield", sister, living with them.

I hope this helps

Many thanks for the look up Jan.

It is a possibility - but I don't think that it is the right Henry because his date of birth  does not quite fit in with the data that I have.

Many thanks for all of the replies.

I don't think that we quite have the right Henry Morris Mason.

He his linked to Mason family detailed in Linda from Oz's post.

He is possibly a son of either Henry or Arthur as both were farmers and the obituray speaks of Henry Morris Mason's  father as being a farmer.

However, I have never found either with a son called Henry Morris

Ada in the 1901 census is the wife of Henry a farmer but I have only ever found this family in any census with two daughters.

Samuel and Sarah are my third great grandparents.

Thanks again everyone,

Andy  Huh

Hi

This is H M Morris's sister who was living with him in the above census.

She is down as grandchild in the 1871 census . The head of the house is a farmer of 20 acres and named Henry At least it gives you her mothers maiden name if you didn't have it that is.

Yes - Thank you this fits.

Harry M is probabaly Henry M and the Son on Henry (not Samuel)

The Henry went on to become a local Farmer.

The enumerator perhaps made two or three mistakes.

This would date the newspaper obituary clipping about 1924 which would also probably fit.

Sarah E. Smedley is the daughter of my scond great grandmother  (Eldest  Sister to Henry aged 29)

Many, Many thanks - Mystery hopefully solved - just a little proving to do.

Andy, Changing the subject do you still need any lookups in Bulkington 1861 or '71 as I now have access?
