Married or not?
« on: Saturday 17 May 08 09:26 BST (UK) »

Hi all

Well I know how helpful you can all be and what a fresh pair of eyes can do to help research, so I was wondering if I might pick your brains.

I am working on the maternal branch of my family tree right now and have gone back pretty far.  However, it is a more recen member of the family I am having a problem with.

My great great grandmother was Letitia Louisa Chapman born 1853 in Middleton Northampton.  She was mother to my grandmother Minnie Constance Williams born 1875 Blackfriars, London.  I have gone back further on Letitia's side of the family but I have not been able to find her marriage to Mr Williams, Minnie's Father.

On the 1871 Census she is living in Finsbury and working as a srvant listed as single. Then in 1881 living in London stated as married and with five year old Minnie.  1891 Census she declares herself as a widow and has Minnie and her younger sister Louisa Clara Williams 2 years old with her, living in London.

I have searched every where and way I can think of to find her marriage to the elusive Mr Williams but have been unsuccessful.

I had a similar problem with Minnie who married a gentleman in 1898 and then married my Great grandfather in 1908 and on the 1901 census declared herself as single and was working as a servant, however I have found both marriages for her.  But was baffled as to why she said she was single and was using her maiden name in 1901.

Was it common place for women to change their names without marriage or after the death of a husband?  I wonder if Letitia could have had Minnie illegitimately and just said her husband was working away or something?

If anyone has any ideas as to where I might find the marriage or how to solve the issue I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance

Could she have been married before, between 1871 and 1875?

I had a similar problem finding the marriage of my ancestor.  She was Kitty Kennington, but had married previously to a William Cooper - I actually found her marriage as Catherine Cooper (the local vicar deciding that her name was short for Catherine when it wasn't).

Hi Erika

Have you got Minnie's birth certificate and if so, who is named as father on certificate? Same goes for her marriage certificate? If you have a full name it may help in the search. Also, have you searched for Mr William's death certificate - you have a short time scale in which to search if Louisa was 2 when Letitia describes herself as widow.

Have you looked for a birth certificate for Minnie in her mother's maiden name i.e. Chapman. That may help solve the problem of whether Letitia married Minnie's father Mr Williams or not.

I had a similar problem with my grandfather, couldn't find his birth certificate anywhere - eventually found it under his mother's maiden name.

Good luck.

Hi

I looked for a marriage in her name in about a 20 year gap I think.  I had the same thought, maybe she married then remarried but I was not able to find anything still.  I am still double checking and checking again, just in case I missed something.

HAve not got the certificate just yet, have just ordered five on the paternal line that I am waiting to arrive.  I know that if I do not find anything soon I shall get it ordered.  I checked under the maiden name as well for minnie's birth, but I found it under williams and on my grandmothers birth certificate it says Williams as her maiden name.

I just thought I might be able to sort it out with out the certificate just yet.

Thanks for the help like I said I am rechecking and double checking

Hi Erika

I had a look too, without success.

What have you traced of Letitia's later life?  I wondered whether you had her death certificate and investigated the circumstances of her illness?

It seems unusual that there is such a large gap between her children and I wonder whether either their father was in the Armed Forces and away a lot, or perhaps they had different fathers?  Are there any family stories that might help?

The marriage of a Letitia CHAPMAN to Henry Frederick TIPSON in 1869 isn't her, because that lady is on the 1871 with him, before he dies in 1875.

I think you might have to get a few certificates!

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Thanks for looking for me it is appreciated.

I have not got her death certificate but I know Letitia was in the London county Lunatic Asylum also known as Claybury Asylum.  I have no way of getting to look at the records in London (due to ill health) so all my research has to be online.  I know that the records are held in LMA and have been unable to find much else out online regarding them.  I am not sure, besides WW1, how to check for armed service records, as I thought that another ancestor may have served in the Boer War and could not find anything.  I wonder if he was in the armed services whether they may have married out of the country for some reason.  I don't know clutching at straws lol.

I have searched and double searched to no avail, I may have to shelve this one until my next lot of certificates are ordered.  I just wondered if I had missed something and at least I know it looks as if I haven't lol.

Thanks for your help.
