« on: Saturday 17 May 08 15:59 BST (UK) »

hello today I received a death cert of my gg grandad James Pearson whom died at the Union Workhouse whitby February 1914..I am interested to locate where he is buried, the National Burial Index website states that there is a James Pearson record for North Riding yorkshire under the heading cleveland memorial inscriptions for 1914, im hoping this is my chap, if I buy credits for this what will it tell me or does anyone know where records/copies are held of the Cleveland memorial inscriptions, thanks

Hi Calvert,

Where did you find the National Burial Index reference?  I can't seem to find one for James for 1914.  If it was in the database it would give his age at death, and place of burial.

The inscriptions would have been collected by Cleveland Family History Society

Hi Calvert,

Still at a loss to know where you found the entry, here's the link to show what coverage the National Burial Index has and Whitby is not included yet:
http://www.ffhs.org.uk/projects/nbi/nry2.php

Would you like to post the link (the address from the top of the webpage) to the page where you found the entry?

Hi Mark,

That link doesn't work, but it's the Family History Online website and I can't find a burial entry for James Pearson for 1914, just the ones I saw on the National Burial Index which as I said doesn't cover Whitby yet.  All the entries on there for North Yorkshire come from the Cleveland Family History Society, not Cleveland Memorial Inscriptions.

As I said, if you find your entry it might be worth the fee as it would show at which church the burial took place, and his age at death

thanks there is an enry for james 1914 as shown below

1. James PEARSON found in Cleveland Memorial Inscriptions 1 entry in Yorkshire N. Riding during 1914 details £0.06

as it is listed, I know it comes from cleveland family history society and when I contacted them regarding the entry they couldnt help me apart from say that the only records of memorial inscriptions they had were for hartlepool area!!, I presume he may have been buried in hartlepool after dying in whitby, which would be strange cause I live in hartlepool

Hi Mark,

right, found it at last!!

All it says is:

Joseph PEARSON Died 1914-1918 aged –  Buried at Shildon, St John, Durham, England

If you think this might be your James, the burial records are held at Durham County Records office http://www.rootschat.com/links/03he/
Don't think he will be yours, though, do you, no reason for him to be buried at Shildon if he died at Whitby?  No age given either.

Strangely, it does quote the database as Cleveland Memorial Inscriptions, and when you click on that it says monumental or gravestone inscriptions collected by Cleveland Family History Society.  (so not burial records)

Maybe contact North Yorks County Record Office to see if they have any Whitby burial information
