Copyhold was a form of tenure of land held in return for money payments. Tenure of such land could be transferred only by its surrender to the lord of the manor, and by admission by him of the new tenant, who might be the heir of the old one. Each admission was recorded in the Court Rolls and a copy of the entry given to the new tenant, for whom it fulfilled the function of a title deed, hence the name Copyhold.

Hi iain,
It is the Rolls of the Court of Baron in which tranfers and grants of land were recorded. Attendance at the Court Baron was compulsory for tenants, and the manor court rolls or books in which the proceedings are recorded can yield valuable genealogical information. However the language is in Latin until 1733. There is a book Manorial Records by Denis Stuart (Philimore 1992), which apparently will help to make sense out of the documents.
