Hi all

I had a look as well.

On the 1871 Michael and Ellen Horan are living in High Street Stockport(page 15) RG10 3659
I scrolled down a few pages  to see if Mary and Patrick were living near the parents and found - page 10 and there's a Patrick Gready with a wife Mary and children Thomas and Mary (born Ireland)also living in High Street Stockport.
I was uncertain at first then thought that perhaps the enumerator might have transcribed the surname as Gready.
Patrick and Mary are either living with or next door to Thomas Heraty in 1871.
Reference RG10 3659.

When I read Alli's post and saw that she found a Patrick Grady on the 1861 in High Street and  living with Thomas Heraty - realised it could possibly be the same Patrick (Grady in 1861 then Gready in 1871)in 1871 but now with  a wife Mary and two children.
Not too far from Michael and Ellen Horan -same street.

Maybe if you have a look and see what you think ?(the age is slightly different-but often changes on the census records) but it's a possibility.

The birth certificate of one of the children(Thomas or Mary)would give the mother's maiden name.

Hope this might help

Hi Belinda

You're welcome-

I suppose it depends on how Patrick pronounced his surname to the enumerator-depending on his accent.

I think that Patrick Gready on the 1871 census may be the right one -just had a look at the Cheshire BMD site and there's a Thomas Grady born in Stockport in 1865 and a Mary Ellen Grady born in Stockport in 1866. The mother's maiden name for both if them is Horan.

These were the names of the two children of Patrick and Mary Gready in 1871.

What do you think?

Hi Belinda

First I found Michael and Ellen Horan then scrolled back a few pages to find Patrick.

If you just want to search for Patrick try Patrick Greany born 1840 Ireland.
(Try enlarging the page - it doesn't  really look like Greany possibly Gready?)

You should see him there with his wife Mary and children Thomas and Mary E.

When you find them -if you go forward a few pages but still living in the same street you should find Michael and Ellen Horan.

Hi again

A possibility on the 1881

Patrick and Mary Grady , Mary E and Thomas, also with a daughter Catherine.

Cheshire BMD has Catherine Grady born 1871 - mother's surname is Horan.

Reference RG11 3749 Folio 9  page11

On the Cheshire BMD there's also Ann Grady born 1869 and Ellen Grady born 1873 - mother's maiden name for both is Horan(just select the surname Grady  - no christian name and  select several years)

Hope this helps

hi neptune - i have now found the 1871 and 1881 census with the instructions you gave me - they do look like this family however it would mean that mary has lost 10 years over a 20 yr period in 1861 she was down as being 27 Huh?
what is your thoughts on this ??

Hi again

The ages are often not quite right. They do seem to be different on the census records. You'd probably have to get some certificates.
Do you know she was definitely Mary Horan?

On Cheshire BMD there's also a marriage of Patrick Grady to Mary Sheridan in 1867.

On the 1871 there's another a Patrick Grady and wife Mary(transcribed as May in the index),both aged 26 - with daughter Margaret. He is the son in law of Bridget Sheridan - address is 55 High Street. - RG10 3659.
(this is as well as the Patrick and Mary Greany/Gready in 1871).

In 1881 this Patrick and Mary are still living at 55 High Street now both aged 32??and both born in Mayo. Also living with them is their daughter Margaret and sister in law Bridget Sheridan. - RG113746/45.

It may be worth a look
