Hello again. it's all nice and quite again so here are some more surnames for the gravestones for Etherley, St Cuthberts. This graveyard also covers Toft Hill and the surrounding area.

Hello Mim. Here are the inscriptions:-
In loving memory of Florence Robina, dearly beloved daughter of William and Elizabeth Hindmarch of Hall Farm, who died October/7/1920, aged 11 years
In loving memory of Clara Hindmarch, who died 15/February/1936, aged 85 years.
Affectionate memory of John Maddison of Toft Hill , who died May/20/1849, aged 32 years. Also Anthony Maddison, son of the above died March/9/1864, aged 15 years. Also George Madison, son of the above, died February/3/1866 age 19 years. Also Thomas Pattison, died April11/1873 ages 61 years.
In loving memory of William Madison of Toft Hill, died April11/1908 aged 63 years. Also Mary, wife of the above, died February 19/19/1919 aged 76 years. Also Their son Tom, died may/11/1917 age 37 years. Also William, died November30/1918 aged 45 years. Also their daughter Mary W, died June/24/1906 aged 32 years.
In loving memory of John Scott, who died Oct/22/1863 aged 67 years. Also Margaret Scott, wife of the above, who died at Durham, August/22/1874 aged 74 years.
There is another Maddison withe the death at 1974 aged 77 years. I do not want to post this on the board in case it may offend someone ( Possible relation who is still alive) I can send it by personal mail if you want it.

When looking round Etherley, have you come across a headstone for a Robert and Esther Lowson and a one for Elias Place, just wondering.

Hello Roger. Yes, here is the inscription for Lowson:-
In loving memory of Robert the beloved husband of Esther Lowson, died July/15/1908 age 46 years. Also the above Esther Lowson who died Oct/2/1932 age 65 years.
No stones for the surname Place.

Hello Roger. Keep the exercise going and this time look under the yew trees:) If I remember I had a job with this one. I looked at my transcribing again and saw that it had a verse between Robert and Esther. I do not normally put in the verse on my postings because it saves time, but here it is. (Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away) I thought to myself at the time that is was appropriate because it was in the shade of the tree. Let me know if you find it.

Hello Jay. Here are the inscriptions:-
In loving memory of our dear mother, Maud Wilkinson the beloved wife of John Wilkinson who died 11/February/1941 aged 61 years. Also our dear father, Robert W Gray who died 31/January/1919 aged 41 years.
William Alton, died march/10/1875 aged 60 years. (This stone is damaged and laid flat)
John Henry Alton of Etherley who was accidentally killed at Randolph? colliery, Evenwood, October/4/1180 aged 45 years. Also Mary Ann , his wife who died December/24/1885/8? aged 44 years. Also Emily,their daughter who died November/8/1882 aged 11 months. (The above inscription was of the lead infill type and this has come out leaving only pin holes to decipher the lettering.) This next part is complete and this makes it easy to read. Also of Alma Mary, beloved daughter of the above who died October/27/1919 aged 31 years.
In loving memory of Annie, the beloved wife of Walker Blackett who died 30/July/1931 aged 78 years. Also Walker Blackett, who died 4/March/1938 aged 83 years.
In loving memory of Dorothy Brownbridge, who died 23/February/1944 aged 66? years.
To the memory of Margaret Race, wife of John Race of Toft Hill who died June/24/1855 aged 24 years. Also of Margaret Jane, daughter of the above who died March/28/1855 aged 21 years.
In loving memory of James Rawe of Etherley, who died February/22/1897 aged 63 years. Also Elizabeth, widow of the above who died December/13/1919 aged 84 years
In affectionate remembrance of James Raw, a native of Brompton, who died at Etherley May/15/1879 aged 81 years. Also Margaret Rawe, wife of the above who died at Brompton, May/16/1865 aged 63 years. Also George Rawe, son of the above who died at Brompton April/29/1865 aged 21 years. Also Francis Rawe, son of the above who died at Etherley December/16/1865 aged 28 years.
In loving memory of Hannah, the beloved wife of John Stephenson of High Etherley, born may/7/1835--- died October/26/1901. Also the above named John Stephenson, born July/17/1835--died July/16/1904. Also Frances Alice, daughter of John and Mary Tace? Balmer who died December/1/1909 aged 4 years.
In memory of Michael? Balmer, of Toft Hill, who died July/30/1870 aged 62 years. Also Thomas Balmer, son of the above who died November/27/1871 aged 21 years. Also Ann, wife of the above who died December/20/1887 age 81 years.
