Howard, it certainly is a fascinating quest
I fear that realistically we are not going to be able to make significant further progress in putting the jigsaw puzzle together without certificates - Minnie's marriage certificate (which ought to tell us about her father, but may not if she was illegitimate) and Jessie's birth certificate (which may yield information about both parents - perhaps including a Masey maiden name for her mother, all being well). Of course we do not know that Jessie was a sister of Minnie, but she certainly seems likely to have been closely related.

Hi Anna You're absolutely right, I'm now waiting for the Marriage Cert, will let you know when received.
Sue, that's interesting, especially as I found that John Wood b: 1842, Thomas's brother (Minnies brother in law) was listed as: 1871 Publisher's assistant. 1881 Publisher. 1891 Bookseller.
May indicate a link with Julius Theodotius Burdett. I think Jorose was inspired when finding those articles.
I've quite a few committments with visitors until after Bank Hol but will work on finding a link when I can.
Thanks for keeping the interest going
Howard

Hello All
Sorry for lack of posting on this thread for a while, I've been waiting for Thomas Wood/ Minnie Burdett Marriage Cert which has not materialised. I have now ordered it myself and the dispatch date is quoted as 23/6/08, so fingers crossed. I will let you all know the content when it arrives.
I'm hoping the Masey name figures somewhere on the Cert, the masey family connection is still a mystery.
More in a week or so!
Regards
Howard

Good morning all. Hope you are still interested!
News at last. I have just received the Marriage Cert for Thomas and Minnie. Info as follows:
Thomas William Wood, Widower, Father: David Richard Wood, Oilman. The above was known, previously married to Eliza Clapton.
Minnie Helena Burdett, Spinster, Father: Julius Theophilus Burdett, Printer.
At: the Church of St Andrew, Lambeth, February 1887.
Witnesses: James Thomas Masey Jus Thos Wood Amy Wood
Jorose was on the button with finding the articles about Julius Theophilus Burdett and his Wives, Brilliant and very interesting.
I haven't done any further hunting yet, I come straight on Rootschat to share the info, as it's taken so long to get hold of.
Best Regards and Thanks
Howard

Excellent news!
Father: Julius Theophilus Wood, Printer.
Presumably his name is in fact given as Burdett, rather than Wood?
Nice to see a Masey witness too. Now I'm going to have to re-read the thread and refresh my memory

Witnesses: James Thomas Masey Jus Thos Wood Amy Wood
Now that I've re-read: James Thomas Masey was of course the chap with whom Minnie was lodging as "visitor" in 1871 and Jessie as "niece" in 1891.

Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper (London, England), Sunday, April 24, 1864; Issue 1118. An inquiry held into the death of Emily Jane Burdett, otherwise Sneesum, aged 31. She had lived with Julius Theodosius Burdett, printer, as his wife, for about seven years. He had three children by her; she had four children altogether, and the eldest was a girl of twelve. One of the children is named as Annie Burdett. It is also said he had three children by his wife. Emily lived at Russell-House, Old Ford.
Emily's death is on the freebmd index under Emily Jane Sneezum.
Looking for more on Emily:
In 1851 Emily J. Sneezum, 18 b Middlesex Clerkenwell, is in Sible Hedingham, Essex as "niece" in the household of the widowed Martha Moss, 43, Proprietor of Houses, b Great Yeldham, Essex: HO107/1784/470/23.

Masey passed down as a middle name in the Wood family. I have a 2nd cousin who knew Minnie, her grandmother. My cousin always said that Masey was a family name but doesn't know the connection. I haven't established the connection yet either.
Thanks for the details on Emily Sneezums, its always difficult moving back when they are not listed with parents, so often the case in this line.
I found Julius Burdett in 1841 Census, living with William and Sarah Burdett. They seem a bit young to be his parents (not stated as such) so assume they are probably siblings.
1851 with wife Sarah Ann and daughter Julia aged 1 month.
1861: Nothing! 1865: Julius likely death in Greenwich, as first noted by Jorose.
Thanks again Anna
Howard

In 1841, Martha Moss is in Sible Hedingham, aged 35, children Martha, 10, Sarah Ann, 9, Emma Maria, 7.
All three of the Moss girls are registered at Dr Williams Library, London, on the IGI (i.e. they were nonconformists), and parents are given as Joseph and Martha. Cannot see a marriage for them. If the Sneezum side of the family were nonconformists it does make tracking them down a little more difficult. There are some Sneezums christened at the Independent church in Wickford, Essex.
I can't find the marriage of James Thomas Masey to a Caroline. There does appear to be a James Thomas Masey marriage in Bedminster in 1843, which fits with a Bristol birth, but no Caroline. (maybe she was a second wife?).

They seem to be his parents (relationships aren't given in the 1841 census). Sarah would (if 1851 is right) be 29, so with the rounding down which took place in 1841 the enumeration as 25 would be correct. William's age in 1841 is given as 30 and he's a dancing master, which ties in nicely with his being a 41-yr-old dancing master in 1851.
