Hi,
I am doing a one name study of the Rossiter family and am looking for information please about the parents, grandparents and siblings of Laura Annabella Rossiter born in the December Quarter of 1857 in Cheltenham.
Any information would be greatly appreciated please. TIA.

Hi rcuser
Well she is rather elusive ! Do you have her on any census ?
The closest I can find in 1871 1861 is this Cheltenham Union workhouse A. R. female, 4, b Cheltenham ...AR = Annabella Rossiter??

Hi Deb,
Many thanks for that.
I'm surprised that she is so hard to find with such a distinctive name.
She is definitely there on FreeBMD but I cannot find a marriage record or death record for her.
I cannot find her in the 1881 UK Census but she may be in there under a married name.
Perhaps we can employ some lateral thinking. Are there many Rossiter families in Cheltenham in the 1851 Census please?
I found a death record for a Mary Jane Rossiter in March Qtr 1858. She could be Laura Annabella's mother and if she was a widow it would explain Laura Annabella being in the Poor House in 1861.
What do you think?
Best wishes

Hi again
In 1851 there is only one Rossiter family living in Cheltenham
1851 149 High street James ROSSITER head mar 29 tailor employing 15 men b Bristol Mary E wife 26 Emily E dau 3 b Cheltenham Mary J dau 4m b " John brother 17 b Bristol Sarah Blackman 20 ser
I think the Mary Jane death you found may be the dau as she is not on the 1861.
1861 Cheltenham James Rossiter 39 Tailor and draper employing 20 men and 5 females b Bristol Mary 36 b London emily E 13 Thomas W 8 Harry H 7 Frank A 5 Arthur 4 Ada Maria 1 all kids b Cheltenham
another family in 1861 Bristol Samuel Rossiter 35 brush maker b Bristol Emma wife 32 Emma 8 b Bristol Thomas 6 b Bristol Eliza 5 b CHELTENHAM Alice 2Mary 11m
I think that ordering the birth cert of Laura Annabella may be the only way to find out. I have looked for her using only fore names , to no avail.
It's very strange not to be able to find her or a death ...will keep digging

Hi deb,
Many thanks for that.
Think you are right about Mary Jane.
I have both those families in my database and as far as I know there is no Laura attached to them.
If Laura is in the Poor House in 1861 does that mean she is an orphan?
If so both parents must be dead by 1861. Mind you we do not know how long she has been there.
Best wishes

I have no idea where she went ... I haved searched all the way to 1891 and she is not there, I even tried Wales on the off chance , but nothing.
If she was in the poor house, which of course we are not certain off, I wonder if she was adopted and given another name? There are so may things that could have transpired ...
I think the birth cert is the only way to go
