Through GR I have made contact with descendents of 4 different branches of my family tree - one in Canada, two in the USA, and one in Australia. I've also found numerous distant cousins in the UK.
I think that these people are just as valuable as archive documents, because they can help in all sorts of unexpected ways. For instance, it was only when a distant cousin contacted me from Australia that the penny dropped with regard to my dad's christian name. He had always hated his first name, and he never used it, and on the first (and only) census he appeared on when he was one year old, his parents didn't appear to be using it either, so I wondered why his parents chose it. When the Australian contact from GR appeared, the penny dropped - my father was named after his mother's brother ! It had been staring me in the face for months, and I hadn't made the connection

We have had a few links on genesreunited, all my husband's side of the family but we aren't paid up members at the moment so can't reply to the latest one which looks good. Have to decide what to do next.
