I am interested in finding more info on the French family. William French born 1791 married Alice Turnbull who died June 1849. Do you have info from an inscription by any chance? I know that they lived at Helm Park and had lots of children. Capmelton

Hello Capmelton. There are no early gravestones for French. This is the earlyest stone and I remember it(and I make notes) because it was leaning over as though the Council gravestone wreckers have been having a go at pushing it over. It is a very nice stone and would benefit by putting upright again. Many of the stones have been pushed over (usually face down and never will be seen again) Other stones have been removed and stacked alongside the boundary wall like a load of paving slabs on a building site. Anyway thats my moan out of the way. Here is the inscription:-
In loving memory of our dear mother Elizabeth French, who died January/25/1929 aged 78 years. Also our dear father, William French, who died January6/1911 aged 61 years. Also our dear sister, Hannah Elizabeth, who died April/19/1912. Also our dear brother, Matthew William, who died November/25/1914 aged 27 years. Also our dear sister Sally, who died May/17/1915 aged 24 years. There may be more information at the bottom of the stone but that is all that I could see.
By the way the stone is at Tow Law.
