**COMPLETED** John Hobbs, 1881C and before, Policeman
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 13:14 BST (UK) »

Hi,
Can SKS help, please?

I have the marriage certificate of Rose Alice Hobbs, aged 19, spinster, to Matthew Romang Butterfield, 21, bachelor at St Annes church Islington on 25th Dec 1884.

Rose's father is given as John Hobbs, a policeman.

I can't find Rose on the 1871C and John on any censuses, 1881C and before.

Would SKS take a look to see if any clue on John can be found. All other relis, both up and down the tree and siblings all lived/worked/died around Islington
Thanks

Hi Nigel,

Not much help with her father but this looks like Rose in 1871:
RG10/275 6 6
Islington, London
2 Brunswick Rd

William W Deighton, head, mar, 40, Warehouse Porter, b. Middlesex Clerkenwell
Elizabeth S, dau, 15, Milliner's Apprentice, b. Mddx Cripplegate
Ann, mother, wid, 71, b. Berkshire Redhill
Rose A Hobbs, niece, 4, b. Middlesex St Brides

Birth registration
Rose Alice Hobbs - Mar 1867 - West London 1c 39

edit: In 1871, at 6 Brunswick Road Islington, there's this family
John Hobbs, 37, Carman unemployed, b. Kent Alesford
Elizabeth, wife, 38, Laundress, b. Marylebone
John W R, son, 12, scholar, b. St Brides
Antony T C, son, 9, b. do.
Jessie A E, dau, 7 mo, b. St Dunstan

Here they are in 1881, now with a daughter Rose age 14 - problem is that John isn't a policeman

What address did Rose marry from?

Hi,
Many Thanks.

I've also looked at these records and come to the conclusion of 'maybe'.
I'm put off by the fact that if Rose Alice was born in W London in 1867, that would have made her 17 at the time of her marriage. Could be possible, of course, rather than the 19 years of age recorded on the marriage certificate.
Also, looking at the 1871C record of her staying with William Deighton, a key could be her place of birth 'St Brides', which would have been in the W London district.
The off putting part is the change of occupation from house keeper to policeman for her father John between the censuses. Again, it certainly was possible, but I've no proof to make a guaranteed connection.
Furthermore, looking then at earlier censuses for John, born in Ashford/Aylesford in Kent shows other children born in St Brides/St Dunstan - all part of W London district.

So, it's all leading in the right direction. Just need to firm it all up with a few more records/certificates.

I guess the clue now, which might tie it all together, is to find a marriage reference of a John Hobbs to an Elizabeth Deighton.

Many thanks for looking at this

Oh, the address given for Rose on her marriage certificate is 28 Durham Road. The same for Matthew Romang, her husband
Thanks

Unfortunately not.

Frederick and Minnie Ferrar are the two signatories

Frederick Ferrar and Minnie Mahoney may have married in Islington, Sep quarter 1884.  I think that they're in the 1901 in South Wimbledon - Frederick born Islington.  Can't find any obvious family connection so far - might have just been family friends.

Hi,
Just a follow up, on John W R, the son

There's an entry for John Hobbs (the son John W R) on the 1881C RG11/244/1/72 at 1 Eden Grove, Kings chambers for men in Islington, in which all the men are listed as 'Brothers (Head)'

Does any one have any idea as to what this 'Chambers for men' would be?

Hmm. Looks like some boarding house, maybe?
The reltionship to head, on the image, is boarder for everybody rather than brother or head.
