Can't remember How to........
« on: Wednesday 21 May 08 01:03 BST (UK) »

I am using Open Office and I like it.  A few weeks ago I managed to ALTERNATE PAGE MARGINS ON ODD AND EVEN PAGES.  This was neccessary so that the inner text doesn't get lost in a spring binder.

I didn't write down how I achieved this!  And now I have spent ages trying to recreate it.  I have pored over the Help instructions and it won't work for me!  I know it can be done because I did it!  But how?

PLEASE can someone help?  Having just watched a programme about Alzheimer's disease I'm beginning to wonder!

I'm new to Open Office myself and I like it too, but it takes a while to get used to all it's features.

I think you need to set the page layout to 'mirrored'

I've not used Open Office per se, but working on the pinciple that all these things function in pretty much the same way....

in my DTP program you go to the Arrange menu, under which you find 'Layout Guides'.  This brings up a window allowing you to set the page margins - left, right, top, bottom - but there's also a box you can check which (in my prog., at least)  is entitled 'Create two backgrounds with mirrored guides'.   If you click on that, the left, right, top bottom options change to read 'inside, outside, top, bottom'.

Just a thought.

Hello,

Thank you both for trying to help.  But I'm still unable to 'set' my choice.  I have gone to format and then styles and formatting and then chosen mirrored and increased the size of the inner margins but nothing happens on the page it is still set at default!  It must be something very simple that I am missing and what is so irritating is that I have already done a 30 page story and it was so easy!!!

So, is there an Open Office expert out there who can stop me from tearing my hair out?  And I promise to write it down so there will not be a repeat of this episode,

Thanks again Mike 175 and Mogsmum,

Ignore last message!!! I have done it.

For anyone else:

Ignore the help instructions and go to FORMAT and then PAGE (not Styles and formatting, nor page styles icon) choose MIRRORED and adjust the INNER MARGIN it works beautifully.  Instantly!

This is how it is done in MS Word:

Quote
Set mirror margins for facing pages

Margins of the left page are a mirror image of those on the right page. That is, the inside margins are the same width, and the outside margins are the same width.

On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Margins tab.
In the Multiple pages list, select Mirror margins.
In the Inside and Outside boxes, enter values for the mirror margins.
Set gutter margins for bound documents

A gutter margin setting adds extra space to the side or top margin of a document you plan to bind. A gutter margin ensures that text isn't obscured by the binding.

On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Margins tab.
In the Gutter box, enter a value for the gutter margin.
In the Gutter position box, click Left or Top.
Note   To change the margins for part of a document, select the text, and then set the margins you want. In the Apply to box, click Selected text. Microsoft Word automatically inserts section breaks before and after the text with the new margin settings. If your document is already divided into sections, you can click in a section or select multiple sections, and then change the margins.

Since Open Office is a copycat version of MS Office it might be a similar method of mirroring the margins.

Have you written it down, saved it, printed several copies and ensured that at least one copy is lodged safely in your bank's vault  Wink Wink

I've got one program that allows me to change any font to 'outline' and then fill in the letters with various fills, with clip art or photos or other effects.   Each time I use it (about 4 times a year) it takes at least 20 minutes to work out how to do it -again.  Each time I think I'll never forget that again ..... but I always do  Roll Eyes

I'm so glad you've cracked it ... well done you!

Mogsmum,

Are you by any chance a Pisces?  I wonder as I have that 20 minute problem except yesterday it was HOURS.  I have to say their instructions were confusing.  Thanks Downside your post may well help someone in Word.

I have written it down in my "Help with Roots Chat problems and others!" on the computer and a twice printed version.  Taking it to the bank tomorrow!

But it's good to know I'm not alone,
