Censuses for Sarah Holt
« on: Wednesday 21 May 08 12:22 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find anything on Sarah Holt bap 1828 North Ferriby Hull. She was the illegitimate daughter of Ruth Holt (1787) from Holme on Spalding Moor. Ruth had 5 other children:-
John Holt 1817
William Holt 1819
Ann Holt 1825
Hannah Holt 1831 She later changed her name to Gray
Jane Holt 1820
Ruth eventually married Robert Gray in 1837 in North Ferriby when she would be about 50 years old.
I cannot find anything on Ann,Sarah or Hannah. I have looked for Sarah under Gray but found nothing.
I would be grateful if anyone could look them up on any census.
Regards

Hello Carole
Not found Sarah on Census as yet but so far this is what I have

1841 Census @ High Street North Ferriby Yorkshire
Robert Gray   Head Marr  45   Ag Lab  Yes born in County
Ruth               Wife           43                              "
HANNAH         dau            10                              "

I know Robert and Ruth's ages seem 10 years out

1851 @ Melton Sutton Yorkshire
Robert Gray    Head marr 64  Ag  Lab            Born Yorks Willerby
Ruth               Wife           63                            "               Holme
WILLAM HOLT son            31   "     "                 "         South Ferriby

1861 @ Etton Yorkshire
Robert   Gray   Head Widower 86                      "             Holme
Ann          "      Dau   Un/Marr   52                      "             Etton

Ages out again but there is a Death on BMD which would fit with Robert being a widower on this Census.

BMD Death Dec qtr 1857 Ruth Gray Reg Sculcoates 9d (9) 7??

Also on BMD a possible Marriage for Sarah
Sarah Holt Sept qtr 1851 to either Thomas Wilcock or Philip Armitage reg
HULL 22 361

Hi Pam
This is fantastic information that you have found for me, thank you so much.
I think the 1841 and 1851 is definitely my family, but I am not sure about the 1861, Ann would only have been 36 so it is a big age difference, and she was born North Ferriby.
I have marriage record for a Sarah Holt taken from Yorkshire BMD and she married a William Wilcox in 1851, but I haven't seen the marriage cert to prove I have the right person. But this Sarah is the daughter of Swithin Holt and cousin to the illusive Sarah that I am looking for.
The Death record for Ruth looks right. Does Ferriby come under Sculcoates?
I am wondering if Sarah died in infancy but I haven't found any record as yet.
Thanks once again for all the work you have done, it is very much appreciated

Carol

In 1835 Sculcoates became part of Hull
In 1841 Census Hull and Sculcoates
YES North Ferriby was part of Sculcoates Registration District.

Also a note saying Parish of Sculcoates in Municipal Borough of Kingston upon Hull

Also theres was a Work House in Sculcoates wonder if Sarah was in there?

Thanks for that Pam.
I know Sculcoates is part of Hull, but I didn't know if it covered Ferriby as that is on the outskirts.
I suppose it is worth looking in workhouse records for Sarah, but why would she be there when her mother and siblings were still alive? Did hospitals come under workhouse in those days - I'm a bit ignorant!!!
I had a lady contact me on Genes Reunited, she has been looking for Sarah Holt for 20 years, but we came to the conclusion hers is a different Sarah. I hope I don't take that long!

It looks as though I might have to send for some certs!

The John Holt from Holme on Spalding looks interesting, that's where the Holt family originated. I think he could be the grand daddy of them all! If it's the right one ,he married Elizabeth Garnet in 1769 - he's another one I have been having problems with. A John Holt married Elizabeth Danby in 1782 and I don't know if it is the same John married twice. I have been a few years trying to sort him out!
