I have a marriage certificate (St Clement Dane’s London)for my 4xgreat grands:
Year 1796 John Dyer if this parish, Widower, and Eliza Seager of the same parish, Spinster, were married in this church by (Banns? illegible), this fourth day of January in the Year One Thoufand, seven Hundred and ninety six by me, George (illegible) (illegible). The marriage was folemnized between Us John Dyer Eliza Seager In the Prefence of: Jno Shepherd, Mary Rout(?), Sarah Seager, Jno Rout(?)
I have not been able to find any information, parents etc, about this couple before or at the time of their marriage; John Dyer is a very common name and Seager is not uncommon. On IGI I found a number of entries for the ROUT surname with baptisms at the Butt Lane Independent chapel; tried Seager and up came some more which fitted very nicely, especially Elizabeth Seager baptised 1770 as Eliza, the bride in this marriage, died in Wiltshire aged 63 in March 1834 (so she would not have had her birthday in 1834). Also in the list of 9 siblings for Elizabeth Seager there are two “Sarah Seagers”, who would be Elizabeth’s sisters? So I assume that one of them is the Sarah Seager who signed the marriage certificate. (Did one die and they used the name again?? – maybe there is more than one family but both have the same parents listed). This is all too much of a co-incidence for these not to be the people on the marriage certificate. Wonder why they married up west though?
To add to all this is the knowledge that John Dyer worked for the Royal Hospital Greenwich and for the Admiralty - rising to be Chief Clerk, and John and Eliza had 8 children, 4 of whom were baptised at the Royal Hospital and 4 at the Greenwich Road New Chapel-Independent, Greenwich. John moved the family to Paddington some time between 1810 and 1820 and was a high profile member of the (I think Congregational) Paddington Chapel. His son Samuel became a missionary, working in Malaysia and Singapore in the 1830s/40s.
Once again, this fits with the non-conformist background of the Seagers at Butt Lane Independent.
Family notes by John and Eliza’s daughter say that Eliza, was born in Kent – once again this fits.
Another reference to the family in memoirs about the missionary son (there is a Wikipedia entry about him – Samuel Dyer) states that Eliza was “amiable and well-educated”. John and Eliza’s children all did well in life – one doctor, one lawyer, an Anglican priest, the non-conformist missionary,a Naval Commander and another Chief Clerk to the Admiralty so I would think that Eliza was not from a poor family. Obviously I could be entirely wrong about that!
Any information about whether my Eliza/beth belongs to the Deptford Seagers would be gratefully recieved!
