Hi jc26red, I have just been back on the above site, putting "Photosmart printhead problems" in the search box, and some very similar solutions to the ones suggested on the Canon forum are coming up. I think it's worth a read, just out of interest.
I was sceptical myself that it would make any difference to my Canon printer, having tried everything the manufacturer suggested apart from buying a new printhead, which would have cost me about £80. It was a case of trying a new printhead or replacing the printer with a new one, so I tried the suggested tips as a last option before buying a new printer, as quite a few people on the forum had said that replacing the printhead hadn't made any difference to the print problem.
I think that, if it is a case of the printer being no use as it stands, anything is worth a try. After all ,you can't break something which is already broken. Cheers, Pat.

I used to work for HP in their technical customer services giving technical help to customers... I also wrote their technical help on the web. I know the engineers and the development engineers in the US personally - believe me, HP printers are not constructed in the same way as Canon and what you are suggesting would not work. I already knew of the site you mentioned.
I can understand why you googled for help and you were very lucky to find a solution for your model of Canon printer but what works for one make/model of printer doesn't necessarily work for another.

Hi jc, I am more than willing to bow down to your technical experience on this one. I was simply quite elated to have solved my own printer problem by what seemed to be an unlikely method, and was hoping that someone else could do the same. Hopefully, if nothing else, reading this could help someone solve their "Canon" problem, so maybe some good will come of my posting. I personally have had a lot of technical help since joining RootsChat, and I think it is great that we can use these forums to learn. Cheers, Pat.
