Searching the Bishops' Transcripts
« on: Thursday 22 May 08 21:46 BST (UK) »

Hi

Darlingtonian drew our attention to the availability of the Durham Bishops' Transcripts on

http://search.labs.familysearch.org

This is a very handy if slightly frustrating web resource for those of us who are out of range for day visits to the Durham Record Office.  It is frustrating because of the apparent absence of large blocks of data.  For example I thought that there were no records from Durham, St Oswald's but I was wrong.  If you search

Durham>Durham

you will arrive at a list of 9 date ranges and these conceal the entries for eight parishes including St Oswald:

11740-1836Durham St Nicholas
21762-1841Durham St Mary-le-Bow
31765-1919Durham St Margaret includes Nevilles Cross St John
41773-1869Durham St Oswald
51837-1838Durham St Mary the Less
61813-1848Durham Cathedral
71850-1919Chapelry of St Margaret
81863-1893Durham St Cuthbert
91878-1878Durham St Cuthbert (burials)

People who are interested in Dalton-le Dale should look for data in Durham>Calton-le-Dale until Familysearch correct their index entry.

I hope that this is helpful.  It really is worth a look if you cannot get to the originals in Durham.

All the best

Gobbo

At the moment. 27 May 2009, you may search the Bishops' Transcripts s follows

1. Go to http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch
2. Click on Europe on the map
3. Click the last entry in the UK list - England, Diocese of Durham Bishops' Transcripts
4. Click on the county that you want.  Note North Durham is in Northumberland)
5. Scroll to the Parish you want, click
6. Select the dates you want (if they are there)
7. Scroll through the images

There are a few index entries labelled unknown.  These seem to be short runs of parish records that have become separated from the rest.  The table below lists the content of the "unknowns" that  have found.

Message for Gobbo regarding many of the names in your interest list:

I have interests in the following names too:  Co?per from Scotland (James 'married' Dorothy Heaviside) and Thompson Harland married Jane Heaviside.  Do these marriages figure in your research?

Jane and Dorothy had a brother Thomas who was my GGGGF.

Hi

I cannot help with Bishopwearmouth and Whitburn.

There is a long run of records for Wallsend, Northumberland in the Durham>Sunderland>1769 to 1842 series.  Wallsend starts at image 119 with baptisms (from 1 Jan 1813) and ends at image 695 (burials 1833).  Image 697 is Sunderland burials 1770: this Sunderland series ends with a page of burials in 1820 on image 1412.

As far as I can tell the early Sunderland images, 1 -118, are duplicated from 696 to 813.

All the best

Interesting about Wallsend as the records under the correct heading start at 1833.

I find these very useful even though I live in Northumberland and can get to both records offices but for the odd look up these are just so much easier.

What I would prefer, however, is that they concentrated on records pre civil registration.

Just a note on Dalton-le-Dale - the records are now pretty much complete to 1812 on FreeREG

The Internet Archive has some free downloadable Parish Register transcriptions for Ryton, Castle Eden and Conscliffe in Co Durham.
Also Eglingham, Edlingham, Berwick upon Tweed, Alnham, Corbridge, Elsdon, Ingram and Lesbury in Northumberland.
Covers some dates not covered by the Bishops Transcripts.
Also about 50 sets of Parish Register transcriptions for Yorkshire for anybody looking further south.
New records are regularly added so worth checking back.

I don't seem to be able to access any of the pdfs digitised by Google whereas the others are all accessible with no problem.

Am I missing something?
