Help to find Tew family
« on: Friday 23 May 08 01:24 BST (UK) »

Hello

Would anyone have a 1891 or 1901 census for Islington, London.
I am looking for Frederick Tew born in Leire 1852 and his wife Margaret ?.
They had a son named Frederick born about 1881 in Islington.
I need to know if they had any more children between these years.

Thanks

That particular family don't seem to appear on the censuses after 1881 in England or Wales.
Are you researching forward from the Leicestershire Tew family or backwards from the birth of Frederick in Islington? If the latter how sure are you that you have the right Frederick Tew born Islington circa 1881?

1901 census RG13 174 folio 96
67 Bride Street Islington
Frederick Tew 38 Head Married General Labourer Pounden? Bucks
Susan Tew 39 Wife Married Kensington London
Frederick Tew 19 Son Book ? Apprentice Islington London
Rosetta Tew 5 Daughter Islington
Eliza Wilkinson 54 Sister in law Single Kensington

Interesting, I wonder if they moved?
I have Frederick in the 1871 census Pancras RG10/207 Folio 46 page 10.  He is 19 un married and lodging at Railway Cottage, St Pancras, London.
I will have to go back over my research to see where I got his marraige to Maragert.
I know that his sister Patience was married and living in London in the 1901 census.

The family found by Valda in 1901 is not yours.   Both father and son are named Frederick George Tew and FG senior married a Susan in 1880 Islington.

However, I cannot locate a marriage for a Frederick Tew to a Margaret.   A marriage at St. Pancras in 1875 was to an Elizabeth Jane Keys and both were older than your couple.   The only possibility would appear to be a marriage in 1876 at Rochford to either an Ellen Eliza Cheeseman or Mary Ann Stibbards.   (The other groom involved being a William Ingham Law).   Since I can't find a Frederick Tew with an Ellen in 1881 I wonder whether 'Margaret' bc.1849 Prittlewell could in fact be Mary Ann Stibbards.   There was a Stibbards family in Prittlewell although Mary Ann was b.1845.   Frederick's wife in 1881 was older than him so perhaps she knocked some years off her age.

Having said all of that I still cannot locate Frederick in 1891/1901.   It looks like Frederick senior could have died in Sept.1890 St. Pancras (bc.1852).   If his widow remarried Frederick could possibly have appeared under her new name.

Best I can do I'm afraid.

The family found by Valda in 1901 is not yours.

I think that's point!

If working backwards, there is another Frederick Tew that needs to be looked at.

Thank you Richard I obviously didn't make myself clear enough

which is why I gave the other 1901 census information since that Frederick Tew was also born in Islington close to the same time and he too had a father called Frederick. If you were searching for a Frederick Tew born Islington whose father was also called Frederick it would be easy to muddle the two and I was just checking whether that was the case or not.

Following on from Annette's post

Births Sep 1876
Tew  Frederick Stibbards    Islington  1b 277
Deaths Sep 1876
Tew  Frederick Stibbards  0  Islington  1b 182
Births Mar 1880
Tew  Frederick     Islington  1b 452

Deaths Mar 1890
Tew  Mary Ann  44  Pancras  1b 127
Deaths Sep 1890
Tew  Frederick  38  Pancras  1b 114

It doesn't clear up what happened to Frederick junior.
