Orphanages in Sussex
« on: Friday 23 May 08 11:20 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

Please can anyone help with information regarding how to locate possible records relating to Orphanages (and the childeren within) in Sussex area.

My grandmother, Doris May HILLS, was one of a pair of twin girls (sister = Gladys Lillian HILLS) born near Brighton on 24 Jul 1914.

Doris and Gladys's mother, Lillian May COLE died when the girls were 4 years old (it is thought while giving birth to another girl Violet Rose HILLS). Their father who was in the RAF could not cope looking after the 3 girls alone so sadly the girls were all split up...

Doris May was put in an Orphanage
Gladys Lillian was Fostered
Violet Rose was Adoted

I am specifically looking for the Orphanage which Doris went into, can anyone help with any information, names etc in order for me to track down Orphin records in Brighton Area?

Thank you,

Jim

I would contact East Sussex Record Office in the first instance:

http://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/leisureandtourism/localandfamilyhistory/esro/default.htm
In particular, in East Sussex County Council records:

Quote
Social Services Department: regs of childrens’ homes from 1907, regs of adoption from 1944, records of Mile Oak Approved School, 1904-77 (C/S and R/S)

and Board of Guardian records:

Quote
Brighton Parish Guardians: mins and rpts 1902-30, adm etc regs 1871-1930, children’s home records 1877-1930, plans 1864-1929

 Hi Jim,
here is the following for you.
  Births area Steyning,west sussex

Doris May Hills  Sept 1/4 1914  ref  2B/418
Gladys Lillian    Sept 1/4 1914  ref 2B/418

Violet Rose  June 1/4 1916  ref 2B/385

Deaths  area Steyning,west sussex

  Lillian M Hills  Dec 1/4 1918  age 22  ref 2B/584

any of these can be obtained for £7 with ref provided, can do it online through GRO
the orphanage I gave you is probably wrong as these were in west sussex not east.

St,Mary,s Brighton and Hove looks most likely, was formerly a penetentuary for girls and boys,in 1917 was taken over by the church army and run as a girls home by nuns, details on the web.

I suggest you also have a look at the Genes website where there are numerous others with an interest in this particular Hills family.  They give the children's birth adresses as 37 Havelock Road and 8 Brigden Street.  One of those contacts may have more info and might be able to short circuit your search of the local records.   (I am presuming the interested party called James is not you Jim)
