Hi, I'm looking for anyone researching the Goodman family of Hepworth and Barningham. My 4x gt grandfather was John Goodman born abt 1794. He married Mary Ann and moved to Barningham. Most of the Goodmans were millers in both villages and I am interested in any information about the mills. My 3x gt grandfather was Daniel Goodman bap 18 Feb 1838 in Barningham. He married Emily Starns in 1859 after moving to Haverhill.

Hi, I'm not sure, I found a marriage on 26 May 1822 in Gt Ashfield between John Goodman and Mary Ann Perry but don't really know if this is the right couple.

It looks the only possible one on the Suffolk Marriage Index.

Hi, Thanks very much for the interesting information. John Goodman was my 4x gt grandfather and David was his brother and Charles and Robert were Davids sons. Charles later moved to the mill at Market Weston and George was his son. I was interested in the criminal info. I seem to have a very long list of dubious rellies! Thanks again.

On the mill front...the mill at Hepworth was an open post mill (typical Suffolk, though no roundhouse) and was believed to have started with 4 cloth sails, later two were replaced with patent sails. She was high enough to get a cart under the mill and was demolished prior to WW1.
I'm not sure which of the 2 mills at Barmingham John Goodman had, and anyway, have little details on them.
Market Weston Mill an was open post mill too. Working 2 pairs of stones via 4 patent sails, and was also pulled down before WW1.
By the way, any info you might have on the mills and your family connection would be a great addtition to my mill database.
Cheers, Windy Miller

Hi Windy Miller, I'm afraid I don't have any information about the mills the Goodman's worked in. Thanks for the details I was very interested about the mill at Hepworth. All the details I have on the family have been gleaned from census and Hepworth parish registers but I am willing to share any information if you are interested. Milling seems to have been in the blood as sons became millers as well as far afield as Essex and Lancashire!

Hi, I've just found your site. My husband's 4x gt grandfather was Samuel Goodman b c1752 Hepworth (married Sarah Woolsey(?) of Barningham). He owned the mill in Hepworth & when he died in 1819 he left it to his widow who in turn made a will leaving it to their youngest son David Goodman.
My husband's 3x gt grandfather was David's older brother. He was called Samuel, b.1786 in Hepworth He inherited other property in Hepworth under the terms of the will, as did his other brothers and sisters. The will (dated Oct 1824) bequeathes "the windmill, stable, cart shed, and outbuildings and lands lying on the north side of the Turnpike road in the parish of Hepworth" We have located it on the tithe map of 1855 & in the rent register. We have also visited the site in the village.
I'm interested in exchanging more info about the Goodmans and also the Holdens of Hepworth. (Samuel's daughter Mary Ann Goodman married David Holden in 1839). from Gaskell

Hi Gaskell, My 5x gt grandparents were Samuel and Sarah! I am descended through their son John who married Mary Ann Perry in 1822. I had no idea Samuel owned the mill at Hepworth. Very interesting. Would be pleased to swap information.

Hi Tempsford, re the mill at Hepworth: Samuel Goodman left it to his wife Sarah who in turn bequeathed it to their youngest son, David. I have a copy of the will ,which mentions their other children including your John Goodman.
I'd be happy to swap info but don't know where to start, so perhaps you could send me a few queries. We live in Suffolk, about 20 miles south west of Hepworth and Barningham, and about 8 miles east of Haverhill. I visit the Suffolk record office at Bury occasionally.
Hope to hear from you soon - Gaskell (my first name is Judith by the way; Gaskell was my maiden name - my lot are all from "oop North")
