Durham challenge
« on: Saturday 24 May 08 21:34 BST (UK) »

Hi
Is there anyone out there who can help me find my grandmothers birth. I have her marriage details, I have two children details(to a man who was not unfortunately her husband!!) and I have her death details, but cannot find her birth.
Here goes Huh Huh
Her name was Margaret West, father thomas west. Living in South Shields when she married John William Thompson in 1925. I have been to South shields and checked electoral roles when Margaret was living with my grandfather(but never married) in the early 1930's. his name was William Storey Hewson, they had two children in 1933 (my mother) and in 1934(my uncle). Alas she passed away in 1936 age 33 in South shields. I even know she is buried in Westoe cemetry. I now have reason to believe she may have been born not in South shields but in Stockton. She had a sister called Isabella born 1908/9 (married name Sim). I have many more details but I desperately need help so my mother who cannot obviously remember her mum has as much information as possible.
Huh

There was a Margaret West born in Stockton in 1903, you can search the indexes:
www.middlesbrough-indexes.co.uk

When you find the appropriate record you can click on the link and the Register Office will check any details you give them, such as father's name, occupation etc. Isabella is also listed, born in Stockton in 1908

Yes I did Lyp. Just to confirm the steps:
Click on 'Search' at the lefthand side
Click the button for 'birth'
Enter the Surname, forename and year. (Make sure you enter the surname first, I've sometimes made the mistake of putting the forename in the first box)
You can specify the exact year or a range of up to 5 years either side. For the records you are looking for, leave it as the default 'year specified'
When you find the record there's a heading at the right 'Click to contact', click where it says it says 'Stockton-on-Tees'. You would normally post your query there but I've just tried it and it says to contact the office directly on 01642 527720.
I haven't had much contact with the Stckton office but the one at Middlesbrough is very efficient so I think you'll probably find them very helpful.
