Hi Dolly,

The problem seems to occur when you don't allow an image to fully open before moving to the next.  That's how I discovered it.
Ancestry seem to be blaming their Enhanced Image Viewer.

No problem with Ancestry since I followed their instructions
PM me your email address and I'll forward the instructions they sent me to remove it

I assume you're aware of the problems with the Ancestry image viewer and Norton Internet Security 2008Shocked

Well I do zip about quite quickly backwards and forwards through the pages so I can see that could be a possibility.

Ancestry image viewing totally ground to a halt yesterday afternoon (Bank Holiday Monday).  I think everybody stayed indoors and huddled around their computers  Wink  I think many of the image viewing problems are due to their (sometimes overloaded) servers - viewing images creates the highest levels of internet traffic.

Milly, have you tried using a multi-tabbed browser like Internet Explorer 7, or Firefox ?  You can open new images on separate tabs, and whizz between them by clicking the tabs, or CTRL+TAB on the keyboard.  You can get images to open in a new tab in IE7 (when multi-tabs are enabled),  by right-clicking the link and selecting "Open in New Tab"  Smiley

I had been getting the same problem that the pages were freezing on downloads. I have now overcome this by increasing the 'Disc Space to use' in my Internet Temp Files from 250 to 750 MB. Simply RC on Internet Explorer, Properties, and Bowsing History. Cured it for me.

Surely it seems to me that Ancestry are trying to blame our computers etc, when I think it is simply an overload of users.............

Well, I had the same problems a while ago, and I was blaming Ancestry too, and it was even more frustrating when I found that a new computer that I'd built from scratch was having the same problems.  Then I did some Googling, and found that a few people had found the culprit - Norton Internet Explorer 2008 !   Even worse, some of these people were Roots Chatters, and the problem was first reported here Christmas 2007 !  Embarrassed

What should be happening is for the developers of the Ancestry site and Symantec to take ownership of the problems, but it seems that each blames the other.  Since I can't live without Ancestry and I can live without Norton, I have dumped the latter.  Ancestry is a very complex web site, and it does use a lot of the enhanced browser features, and if your computer is not set up exactly right, it will show.

I have never had Norton and Ancestry has worked perfectly for me until lately.  It is playing up again but I did read that Ancestry were re-organising their site and this is probably the culprit if they, them selves, are not helping subscribers.

I even had trouble paying a first sub to Ancestry when they kept telling me to change my E mail as it was not  valid.  In the end I rang their headquarters for an explanation and I was fobbed off by being told that  nobody who dealt with technical questions was available.  However, I gave them an ultimatum and said that unless they dealt with it immediately I was not going to pay the full sub as I had intended to do.  That did it and my sub was accepted there and then.

It was not only my E mail which they said was invalid but that I already had  a number of User names and Passwords of which I knew nothing.

I certainly would not blame one's own computer when everything is running smoothly and then one finds that the problem is being encountered by so many Ancestry users at the same time.

Is your email address with one of the big email prividers (Yahoo, Hotmail, Google, etc) ?

If it is, Ancestry may have been inferring that this email address may have been used in the past, and they wouldn't accept it again (even if it was one used by someone else, but lapsed).  Some of these big websites can use some absolutely stunningly rudimentary customer ID systems.

I have only ever had one E mail address which  has been used since purchasing a computer .  It is with AOL.

I have received Ancestry info thru this address before I joined Ancestry, myself.  I wonderd if that may have been relevant.  After receiving such mail I kept receiving inviatations to take out Ancestry membership.

I don't know much about AOL email addresses, because I have never used them, and I don't know anyone that has*.  The fact that you received emails from Ancestry before you contacted them may indicate that someone else was using your AOL email address before you were.  I'm not sure if AOL re-issue old email addresses.  If you're still intent on taking out ancestry membership, I'd suggest getting another email account somewhere (like Hotmail or Google), or better still, get your own domain with email, so you're never tied to an ISP.

* and this could probably be a reason - "AOL man pleads guilty to selling 92m email addresses" - not a great reputuation for security !  Undecided

I too have been having problems with Anc.co (previous post) and at the moment am using husband's laptop as mine has had to go to the computer doctor to be sorted out - can't prove but seems to be directly related to a session on Anc.co when I downloaded image intensifier.

Am no longer a member BUT which is the best alternative now!   There are many websites around but Anc.co appears to have "cornered the market" and appears to have outgrown itself!   Where do other members here go when not using anc.co.    Slightly bewildered now .....................Sue

Hi everyone,
I've been having the same problems for several weeks now - images downloading at first then stopping. Had to close down ancestry and start afresh, but then after a period it happens again.
I saw the thread and also tried to email Technical Help (system doesn't make it easy) and got the message to remove and re-install the enhanced viewer. Did this, but still had problems.
I'm now viewing with the basic viewer, as it at least it works - but not terribly happy.
Also find it slower generally and sometimes the instruction to search, etc don't always register first time. All this eemed to start a few weeks ago, to a period just before they updated the site.
I wondered at first that it was due to changing broadband supplier, but having seen this thread I now know it's an ancestry problem.
Also checked computer for viruses, etc, and everything appears to be normal.
I agree it is very frustrating and annoying - trouble is getting in touch with them isn't easy, either.
Anyway, I'm going to try again and register my concern.
Kind regards,
Paulene Smiley
