I've been having problems for ages with FireFox crashing using the Ancestry Image Viewer. I just put up with it because when it restarts it reloads the pages you were trying to load when it crashed so its just irritating really.

I took the plunge a few days ago and installed a pre-release FireFox 3 and I have to say I haven't had a single crash since I updated. WooHoo!!!

I would NOT recommend trying it yet though. It hasn't been officially released yet. I would suggest you wait a few days until the official release of FireFox 3 is out before you upgrade.

So, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Smiley

Have a look at:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,307841.0.html

for some of my experiences. The person display problem may not be fixed by the time the official release comes out but I would be willing to bet it will be fixed sometime soon. At least it doesn't crash. Smiley

I had six images in six different tabs open at the same time the other night (same person in every census) and not a single problem!

I have now joined the anti-Ancestry club!!  On advice from Liverpool Annie I returned to Ancestry following an absence of some 18 months.  I took advantage of the 14 day free trial but I also opted for monthly payments as I expect to have to use it for longer than the initial period.

I am experiencing the same problems as everyone else.  The first day I was on for about 1 hour then I could not view the actual BMD page, the next day for about 3/4 hour and then a blank screen.  To-day I managed just 10 minutes, so I fired off an e-mail to them.  Judging by previous posts I shouldn't hold my breath as to receiving a reply.

A final thought - is there anything to be gained by approaching Trading Standards?

Not much at all, because you can't prove that the problem is Ancestry's.  I originally had problems, but after ditching Norton Internet security I don't have any problems at all viewing images.  Others have had success by changing to the latest version of Firefox.  So it can be done.  Have you looked at Ancestry's help pages for resolving this problem ?  There's quite a few suggestions on it, including anti-virus and phishing filter problems.

Nick29

Thanks but my suggestion was more tongue in cheek!

Actually I have had a very quick response from Ancestry mainly blaming Norton and anti-phising solutions.  However they have not really answered my point that I can view for long periods without any interruptions/failures and then I can't.  I am inclined to go along with the general view that too many users are trying to access their site at the same time; anyway I will persevere.

Ahh, you can always tell what the weather is like outside, by the speed of Ancestry's servers ! [smile]

During a recent cold and wet Bank Holiday, they were running like treacle.  Unfortunately, images use the most server resources (due to the large download file size), so they do take a bit longer to arrive.

Just a thought, have you tried increasing the hard disk space that your browser is allowed to use ?  This can avoid re-loading images that you have viewed before, because you will already have a local copy in the cache.  A couple of people have done this and reported good results.

I have had no response from Ancestry to my specific enquiry about whether they are applying a usage policy, which I take to mean that they are.

I don't really object to this, it's a reasonably fair way of coping with too much demand, and at least it's possible to continue looking at census indexes and other resources when images cease to load. It's better than not being able to log on at all, which is what used to happen.

I just wish they would come clean about it!

Well, spoke too soon! I've now heard from Ancestry, who say there is no usage limitation. They say that images won't load when the site is being updated. I'll enquire further.
