Stephenson Obituary
« on: Sunday 25 May 08 00:54 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Snowdon Stephenson, b. 1886, Durham, was a school teacher in Durham and was, according to family information,
a headmaster.  I've been told that while coaching a school
cricket game he was hit in the head by a ball and died of the injuries leaving his wife Margaret and two children.  The date
of death is Nov. 20, 1937.

Would anyone be able to help me find a newspaper item of this and/or his obituary?

Thank you,
Kathleen

Thanks very much for the helpful information, Grant.

I should check the map -- is Newcastle near Annfield?

I received copy of similar notice posted in The Northern Echo.

The person at Darlington Library was quite helpful and gave
me names of other local papers.  I had thought that there
may have been at least a small item about the unusual occurrence and will do some more looking.

Hi Kathleen

Pleased you managed to get a copy.

The Durham Chronicle held at County Hall might have a write up about it, although Darlington might of already suggested this anyway.

Cheers

Annfield Plain is some 12 miles south-west of Newcastle on Tyne - in the centre of this map http://www.rootschat.com/links/03n8/

Thanks very much, Jennifer.  I guess it's not unusual that
the notice would be in several neighbouring community
papers.

I received an e-mail today from Durham County in response
to my query.

They found report of the funeral in The Stanley News published Nov 25, 1937.  Also, in the Log Books for Hare Law Board Mixed School, May 1909 to Dec 1937, they found an entry by Snowdon relating to his appointment as Head Teacher on April 1, 1924.  It includes his date of birth and a reference to his training in Edinburgh.

However, as it would cost 8 pounds for these items, I'll have to wait awhile.

I really appreciate their assistance and post this for others'
information re their help.

I have a privately published book entitled 'The Story of Annfield Plain and District'.

In this it says that Mr Stephenson was head of Hare Law School from 1924 until 1932.

Thank you for this, Jennifer.

Does the author mention the size of the school during that
period or any other descriptions or a photo that would add to the family history for me?

Regards,

Kathleen

Not much about the school at that time I'm afraid, but here is a potted version of what it does say:

Hare Law school was a 'National School' which opened in 1846. it was the only government aided and inspected school in the district until 1875.
The first headmaster was Mr Anthony Wilson.
The next head, from 1855 was Thomas Teaside, who died 1863.
The attendance became very small and the school was closed for some years, but was then taken over by Kyo Laws School Board in 1886.
The school was extended and re-opened under the headship of Mr W.S. Telford.
Mr Herdman was head from 1908 until 1924, and Mr S. Stephenson head until 1932, then followed by Mr A. Morrison.
Mr W. Dowson was appointed in 1947.
The school closed in 1960, and at the time of writing of the book (c. 1966) it was being used as a Youth Club.

Not much relevance to your enquiry I'm afraid but hope it is of some interest.
