Phillips

Having obtained the marriage certificate for George Batham and Jane Phillips 1871 Kensington, I find her father is James Phillips, carpenter, resident in Chelsea. The 1851 census says he was born abt 1802 in Netley Hants. There is a submitted entry in IGI which gives Hound Hants as place of baptism, Netley not having it's own church. Parents are given as Thomas Phillips and Ann. However, there is nothing on IGI to indicate a suitable marriage in that area. When James went to London is not known, but he married Jane Dusolei in Soho 1824. Did Thomas and Ann also go to London ? Just because James was born in Hants doesn't mean his parents were. So where do I go from here ? Roy

I can confirm the baptism:
James Philips, son of Thomas and Ann, baptised in Hound 13 Jun 1802
Phillips is a name that might be spelled in a variety of ways and Thomas and Ann are not uncommon names either.
However, Thomas and Ann(e) seem to have been in Hound, baptising children between 1796 and 1805.
A Thomas Phillips was buried in Hound 27 Nov 1805. An Ann Phillips was buried in Hound 6 Nov 1811 aged 45.
There is an Administration recorded at Hampshire Record Office for Thomas Phillips of Netley, Hound, yeoman in 1812.

Thanks Little Nell, I had found siblings of James between 1796 and 1805. There were also some born to James Phillips and Elizabeth, possibly a brother of Thomas. This seems to tie in with a marriage just given to me by private message Thomas and Ann Moody 1788 at Chilworth Hants. If that is correct then the father of Thomas born abt 1770 was another Thomas, mother Mary Mayuger. Some of my ancestors had strange names. A death of Ann 1811 aged 45 could possibly be Jame's mother, but a death of Thomas 1805 is more likely a sibling

I too found the marriage in Chilworth, but I was reluctant to accept that as definite since there do not seem to be any children definitely attributable to the couple before they turn up in Hound.
There is a couple Thomas & Ann Phillips who had some children baptised in St Mary in Southampton, but they seem to overlap with those at Hound.
More digging required, methinks.
