If anyone has access to the 1798 Posse Comitatus for Olney I'd appreciate a look up for any DUMVILLE/DUNVILLE mentions. I understand there is at least an entry for John, watchmaker
Many thanks
David

Thanks Tazzie
He's a bit of a mystery as he was baptised in Olney, but when he married Mary Perry in Olney he was living in Ashwell, Herts where banns were published. He then turns up in St Ives Hunts in 1801, where he stayed as a clockmaker for the rest of his days.
What intrigues me though is that an apparently unconnected Dumville family in Cheshire were also clockmakers. For an unusual name like Dumville to have clockmakers in both branches seems a bit of a coincidence, and I'm on record as saying I don't believe in coincidences! It would help if I could trace where he served his apprenticeship, but no luck so far.
Any brilliant ideas (when you get back!) would be appreciated
All the best
David

Hi David.......
Well not a lot to go on really .
On Posse Comitatus he is .....
John Durnville watchmaker No others listed anywhere in county. Thats it.
I listed all the Dumbille/Dumvile/ville names but the only job listed is that of Edmund hatmaker on his burial.
Have you seen the site that lists the family

Thanks very much for checking that for me Tazzie. I saw it on the Dumville site you mention but I never trust other people's trees, and was hoping there might be a bit more, but no such luck! The site is impressive, but I'm beginning to drive a horse and cart through some of the assumptions, although to be fair to them, they state that a lot of the Olney and Canadian lines have been provided by others. They tell me they'll add my research on the next update.
Thanks again
David

Hi David ......
The baptism date given to John snr of 1740. The transcribed entry is given as James son of Edmund & Ann. I have not checked that to the filmed register but could just be a mistake.

Thanks Tazzie, I'd picked that one up - both the IGI and the Bucks FHS transcription on the FFHS pay per view site have it as James. I think John the clockmaker's father was John baptised in 1731
John the clock was resident of Ashwell in 1799 - there was also a James Dumville living in Ashwell 1792-1800. I'm trying to prove who he was, and also to prove that he emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1805. The poor fellow had three wives in four years

Hi That would tie in 1731 was the earliest transcribed record in the book just as son of Edmund. First James may have died as second James baptised in 1744 to Edmund and second wife.
Churchman Dumville and Elizabeth have a daughter Mary in 1774 he does not seem to feature on the web site...only Thomas Churchman bap in 1746.
Interestingly Edmund was a real church man in the book as church warden in 1791.

Notwithstanding that the PR has just Churchman, I think Mary bap 1774 is the daughter of Thomas Churchman Dumville and Elizabeth, which is slightly odd as they'd been living in Shefford Beds since 1766, when they had an Indemnity Certificate from Olney to Campton. Mary was buried the following year at Campton.
Edmund the church warden must have been the son of Edmund senior who died in 1762. Thomas Churchman Dumville was my ancestor, and he turned non-conformist, being a member of Southill Baptist Church, so tracing his children has been made interesting by the lack of baptisms!

Good moaning
Thanks for that John, no I hadn't got it. How'd you find it?
Still chipping away at this lot, but can't find where the James in Ashwell and Potton was from. Pity, as I'm sure he was the one who emigrated to Prince Edward Island and started the Canadian Dumville branch.
Weather is changeable! Bring sun block and an umbrella!!!
