R B Beattie, Burnley
« on: Sunday 25 May 08 16:29 BST (UK) »

R B Beattie was an Electric Light and Power Contractor at 1A St. James Street, Burnley and also Hall Street, Burnley.   Time about 1917.

If possible I would like to know please if he was there before that date and if so when.  I could't find Burnley on the Historical Directories website.   No need to look before 1900 I'm pretty sure.  He was born in the 1870s.

Any help will be much appreciated

Regards

Many thanks for that CatOne.

I had a feeling that he would be in Blackburn then but the fact that he described himself at age 19 as an Electrical Engineer is intriguing.  So he obviously set up shop in Burnley later.

I have a letter with the Burnley address I gave in the first post.  The letter on the headed paper is undated - but I am trying to 'date' it.  I know the writer died in 1908 and the recipient was married in 1893.  Actually the recipient is the Sarah E Duckworth with whom he is staying in the Census extract you gave  Smiley

I'm hoping that If I can find when he opened the shop it will reduce the period when the letter was written.   Ooops. Just had a thought . . . .    He could have been given a copy of the letter by her when he was with her - before or after 1901 - but only typed a copy of it when be opened the shop.

Thanks for listening  Smiley

Oh shame! looks like you are the only one researching that name!.....at the moment anyway.......

Shames theres not a postmarked envelope with your letter giving the date! Guess the directories are your best bet, maybe if you put that in your subject title "Historical Directories - Burnley/Blackburn 1900-1908" someone who has access to them will do a lookup for you.

Good Luck

Thanks Cat
Your identifying Robert (RB) age 19 with his aunt on the 1901 census has to an extent made the original question irrelevant.  The copy letter was to Elspeth, his aunt.  It now is likely that he could have obtained or copied the letter while he was with her - she married in 1893, census was 1901, he was 19 - and then typed it up when he got the Electrical Contractor business in Burnley.

The letter therefore was written between 1893 when Aunt Elspeth was married and 1908 when the writer of the letter died.  I might take up your suggestion to put up another posting - with a changed heading - to try and provide a start date for the typed version.

Thanks again
