Burials in Oban
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 20:25 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for the burials of my Great Grandfather and Mother , David and Emma Mackintosh (David 2/4/1891- Emma 9/6/1889). They died in Oban town but I have been unable to find their graves. The library cannot find them in Penyfuir Cemetary or the old Parish Church and the Council say they do not keep records back that far. Does anyone have any suggestions please???

I have the same problem!  My gt-gt-grandparents died in Oban in the 1890s.  No record of them in Pennyfuir and no headstone in the parish churchyard at Oban or at the churchyards out at Kilmore and Kilbride.
Two of their sons were in business as stonemasons and plasterers, so I assumed that they would have erected a nice stone for their parents, but if they did, I've yet to find it.

Kilmore & Oban Parish Church have a list of lair (plot) owners of the churchyard, it could be worth contacting them.

You may be lucky, there are a few internment records beside the owners names, mostly for the early part of the 19th century.

Thanks Lodger,
I have already made contact with that church and they cannot find a trace. David was an Architect who built some of the prominent buildings in Oban so I am surprised that I cannot find him. There seems to be a kind of 'Bermuda Triangle' for burial records in Oban about that time!!
Anybody else help?? Perhaps someone living in the Oban area who might know why??
