Hi
can anybody explain why my FTM is sometimes duplicating info. e.g. William Burnside aged 9 living with parents George Burnside/Elizabeth unknown living in Newton Midlothian and William Burnside aged 11 living with parents William Burnside/Elizabeth unknown in Gladsmuir,East Lothian. The 2 Williams 9&11 are cousins and parents William and George are brothers. When adding info to the Williams aged 9&11 the info also duplicates to the other William so both Williams have same info. above is a bit complicated to put into words hope somebody understands what I mean and can help me. all help appreciated.
Fiona

I don't have FTM but it sounds like you have the same record linked to both of them. Perhaps when you entered the second one something popped up to ask did you mean the one you already had. Pressing enter/return would probably have confirmed it.
Does FTM display it's record numbers? If so, then a quick check would be to see if these are the same. Otherwise perhaps try listing individuals and see if you have one or two entries for this name. If there are two, it may be that one is linked twice and the other not at all.
In FH (Family Historian), every time I enter a child I have the choice to select an existing member of the tree or enter a new one. I can unlink people from their parents, if necessary, and recreate the links between them. It sounds like you will need to do that for this record.
Perhaps someone familar with FTM can give more precise help.

Hi DudleyWinchurch,Meles,Downside & Crystal
thank you all for your replies and offers of help. I deleted both Williams aged 9 & 11 and then reinstated them, seems to have solved the problem.I guess my problem with duplicating started with merging,I was warned this could happen. again many thanks.
