Does anyone know anything about Green Lane and Holehouse Fold, Romiley during the 1800s.  Where there lots of cottages, terraced houses or what?

Thanks Celia.  I'll have a look at Pigots.  My husband had lots of ancestors living at the two addresses in the first half of the 1800s, they all seemed to work as hatters, or related trades.  I wondered if there was a factory there, or if they were just a lot of small dwellings.  They had anything up to 10 living at one address.

Hi Lizzie,

Take a look at the Stockport Hat Works Museum Website:

http://www.hatworks.org.uk/

Initially people made hats at home to supplement their income, and later worked in factories.   Romiley is close to Stockport so if you contact them they may be able to let you know of any factories in the area.

Jean - We recently learned about the Hat Museum and coincidentally my husband e-mailed them yesterday.  They sent him a reply

"There's a couple of good books that you might be interested in, one on Stockport and one on Denton hatting. They do both concentrate on the felt side of things, but silk hatting is mentioned, and many of the buildings are the same". and the details of the books which they sell.

Celia - That's interesting.  I wonder if the owner of the hatworks owned the houses in Holehouse Fold.  Maybe we'll find out when the books arrive.

Hi Lizzie,

Another idea is to see if you can find them at:

http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/

Looking through the maps for Romily you can see where Holehouse Fold was, and the landowners.  I don't know what names you are looking for to see if they are there.
